About the Author

Darya Pino Rose is the creator of Summer Tomato, one of TIME's 50 Best Websites. She received her Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of California, San Francisco, and her bachelor's degree in molecular and cell biology from UC Berkeley.

Darya spends most of her time thinking and writing about food, health, and science. She eats amazing things daily and hasn't even considered "going on a diet" since 2007. Darya is now a dedicated foodist and advocate of local, seasonal foods.

Mostly Copied Verbatim from the Blog; Common Sense Material

I was really excited for this book, because I liked the blog. I thought that the book would go more deeply into the science/neuroscience of things, or at least provide new content. I was very wrong! Don't waste the money on the book--almost everything is copied from summertomato.com word for word.

The content in the book might be useful to someone that is an absolute beginner to cooking and healthy eating. However, I honestly think there are better books out there to teach you those things. Darya's "angle" is her training as a scientist, but in the book (and on her site these days) that is not obvious at all. In addition, the book is rather poorly written, not to mention condescending and just generally irritating in its voice. Most of the material is common sense, and I came away from the book wondering if I had learned anything at all (note: I can't think of anything). I'm far from a nutritionist (though I am a scientist), so I was surprised that an entire book could be written out of fluff/common sense.

Overall, I don't recommend unless you know nothing about cooking/feeding yourself. Even then, read her website for free and save the money.

Too much opinion and almost no science

As a scientist, I bough this book hoping that she would use science to explain her opinions, as the book is sold as written by a neuroscientist. I only got to read up to page 190, when she starts to recommend a "detox" recalibration avoiding sugar, wheat, dairy and alcohol products with no references at all. The very few drops of science she provides could be found on Michael Pollan books, and this is an area full of research that she should be able to read and talk about. The book is just a compilation of her lifestyle and common opinions.

Fantastic, actionable and sustainable tips for healthy habit forming

Loved this read. I've eaten very healthy for a number of years, but have had a problem getting the last few pounds of body fat off my frame. I've only been using the tricks and tips for a few days but already feel so much more confident and empowered to make the right decisions when I'm out and not able to control the exact calories or ingredients. These occasions would often lead to overeating, feeling guilty, then over-restricting...repeat. Thanks, foodist! Love you and your awesome podcast!
