Nail-biter from Cover to Cover

I remember the news stories, I remember the whole "Free Kevin" movement on the web, I remember reading about his release in newspapers and online magazines. It's awesome to read about these events, now, from his perspective.

I've read several of the negative comments written about this book, and I don't understand why these people read the book in the first place. They talk about not being able to sympathize, they judge Mitnick for taking advantage of people, they hate Mitnick for the way he exploited his mother and grandmother, they talk bad because they can't understand what drove Mitnick to continue to break into systems, they are irritated because of his cocky attitude. In my opinion, those reviews are more emotional than objective.

In common with the people who wrote negative reviews, I too felt bad for his mother, grandmother, friends, him, and everyone he ever used for his criminal activities. I too felt that he had plenty of opportunities to stop and get away clean. I too rolled my eyes when I read about how much smarter he was than everyone else, especially towards the end b/c it'd been ongoing throughout the book. But it's Kevin Mitnick - the social engineer hacker king - Interaction w/ people and mind-screwing most of them is expected, as is the manipulation of relationships in his favor!

My 5 stars because:
I like (auto)biographies, I am an IT professional, I enjoy narratives - this book was a perfect read for me. I could hardly put it down. It only took me a couple of weeks to read (light reading in evenings and heavier on weekends).

I was hooked from the beginning - opening word by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. The book contains a few jaw-dropping moments as Mitnick explains how he infiltrated organizations and systems. It was engaging from cover to cover - reading of how he evaded capture, how he ran counter surveillance on the FBI, how he changed identities, and a whole lot more.

You'll enjoy this book if you:
- are an IT professional
- prefer reading crime-drama novels, autobiographies, or fugitive/on-the-run type novels
- can handle a subject without hating the subjects (can you appreciate genius in a person regardless of how they use their ability?)

I Can't Put It Down

I only have a couple free hours at night, and a few hours in the weekend to read. Every moment free I've had since last week, I have spent reading. Only four days, I am on page 162. This book is one of the best I read. Oddly, Catch Me If You Can is one of my favorite movies. The book is kind of on the same lines but Kevin hacked and used social engineering for people information. Frank in the movie used social engineering for conning people and stealing. Kevin never stole from people.
This book follows Kevin from the time he was around 8, learning to pick locks. I laughed and thought, "at 8 I was playing with Barbies, what a waste of my time." Kevin Mitnick writes in a way that most people can understand and explains every term. Heck he explains how he did everything he accomplished. Ghost in the Wires is a fascinating book. If I had three full free days, I'd have it finished by now. I can't put it down.

Excellent primer on social engineering that everyone should read

I had heard of Kevin Mitnick, but this is the first time reading about his exploits. I think this book should be required reading for anyone who works in help desk or other technology; heck, I worked in a hospital, and I think all of the staff should have been reading it too. In addition to the interesting technology he introduces us to, it gives a great view of social engineering and how easy it was for him to get what he wanted.

While on facebook, a sister from church stated she thought it was time to read The Shack again so I looked it up to see what it was about and immediately order it for my kindle fire. Once I started reading it I read it in a 24 hour period because I couldn't put it down. Once he got to the shack I got so excited in the story I had to calm myself down and take it slow because my mind was all over the place wondering what I'd do or say. I love this book and like my sister friend I will read it again and again and imagine myself there.

Informative, but a dry read

Parts of this book have been interesting, but I find it very dry reading through it. I bought it for a music class I'm taking in college, and I think it's neat how it has hymns in the back of the book to compare to what you're reading (history-wise and analysis-wise), but it's hard to stay focused on it sometimes.

I have found this book to be well researched and presented. The history of hymnology is very thorough. The anthology of hymn examples is quite useful for classroom applications. It would be good to see an expansion of the topics in the introduction into more significant treatment.

Leaves me searching for more

A review of hymnody very heavily weighted towards 19th and 20th-century protestantism. The 20 centuries of Western (Roman) hymnody is barely touched and the 20 centuries of Eastern (Orthodox) hymnody is virtually ignored. In contrast, comprehensive, contemporary choices for hymnody studies should include the Hymnal Companion to the Lutheran Book of Worship (Stulken) and The Hymnal 1982 Companion (Glover).

My edition has some typesetting incongruity that makes it appear as though some of the hymn and tune selections were reproduced from other sources.

If you're looking for a comprehensive study of Christian hymnody, you'll probably be disappointed with this choice.

Francine D. Blau is the Frances Perkins Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Professor of Economics at Cornell University and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is also a Research Fellow of the Institute for the Study of labor (IZA) in Bonn, Germany and of the Center for Economic Studies/Ifo Institute (CESIfo) in Munich, Germany, and a Research Professor at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Berlin, Germany. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University and her B.S.�in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.�She has served as President of the Society of Labor Economists, the Labor and Employment Relations Association, and the Midwest Economics Association; as Vice President of the American Economic Association (AEA); and as Chair of the AEA Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.� She is a fellow of the Society of Labor Economics, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and the Labor and Employment Relations Association.� In 2010, she received the IZA Prize for outstanding academic achievement in the field of labor economics; she was the first woman to receive this prestigious award. �In 2001, she received the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the AEA Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.� She is on the Editorial Boards of the�Industrial & Labor Relations Review,�Journal of Labor Economics,�Feminist Economics,�and�The Annals�and is an Associate Editor of�Labour�Economics; she was formerly an editor of the�Journal of Labor Economics, on the Board of Editors of theAmerican Economic Review, an Associate Editor and on the Advisory Board of the�Journal of Economic Perspectives.� Professor Blau has written extensively on gender issues, wage inequality, immigration and international comparisons of labor market outcomes.� She has published articles in leading economics journals and is the author of�Equal Pay in the Office�and, with Lawrence Kahn, of�At Home and Abroad: U.S. Labor Market Performance in International Perspective�(recipient of the Richard A. Marianne A. Ferber

After a long, successful career, Marianne A. Ferber, Professor of Economics and Women's Studies, Emerita, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, passed away in May 2013, just prior to the publication of the 7th�edition of the textbook. She was born in Czechoslovakia in 1923 and obtained her B.A. at McMaster University in Canada in 1944 and her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1954. She was Distinguished Visiting Professor at Radcliffe (1993-95), president of the Midwest Economic Association (1986-87), and president of the International Association for Feminist Economics (1995-97). She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from McMaster University (1996), the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (2002), and an honorary doctorate from the University of Eastern Illinois (2002). She served for many years on the editorial boards of�Feminist Economics�and of the�Review of Social Economy. She was editor of�Women in the Labor Market, 1998, co-editor of�Work and Family, 1991;�Beyond Economic Man, 1993 (translated into Korean);�Academic Couples, 1997;�Nonstandard Work, 2000, and�Feminist Economics Today, 2003 (translated into Spanish). She published in economics, sociology, education and women's studies journals.� Her passing is deeply mourned by her many friends, colleagues, and admirers, and the many women that she had mentored over the years.

Anne E. Winkler

�

Anne E. Winkler is Professor of Economics and Public Policy Administration at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She is also a Research Fellow at IZA (the Institute for the Study of Labor), Bonn and a Research Affiliate at the National Poverty Center, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her undergraduate degree in economics from Wesleyan University. Professor Winkler’s main research interests are in the economics of gender, the economics of the family, and welfare and poverty. Her work has appeared in economics and broader social science journals includingJournal of Human Resources,�Research in Labor Economics,�Monthly Labor Review,�Demography,�Journal of Policy Analysis and Management,�Journal of Urban Economics,�and�Management Science. Prof. Winkler previously served as 2nd Vice President of the Midwest Economics Association and as President of the St. Louis Chapter of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE). She currently serves on the editorial boards of�Social Science Quarterly�and�Journal of Labor Research�and is a board member of the AEA’s Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP).

This edition is complicated. The 6th edition is better

Tell the instructor you can't find this and buy the older, cheaper version.

Only 1 star because 0 is not an option. I normally keep my college text books but gladly will get rid of this. Content is ok but redundant. the staggering price for a paperback is crazy. After every chapter I compared with an earlier, cheaper version. Not much changed. The authors sense of accomplishment must be inline with their profit margin, but both are unwarranted.
