About the Author

Christopher Thomas holds a doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D.) from Tufts University and is Professor of Math at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. His research centered on Geometric Group Theory, exploring places where algebra and geometry meet. He is the author of Calculus Success in 20 minutes a Day (2006) and Trigonometry Success in 20 Minutes a Day (2007).

Barnett Rich (deceased) held a doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D.) from Columbia University and a doctor of jurisprudence (J.D.) from New York University. He began his professional career at Townsend Harris Hall High School of New York City and was one of the prominent organizers of the High School of Music and Art where he served as the Administrative Assistant. Later he taught at CUNY and Columbia University and held the post of Chairman of Mathematics at Brooklyn Technical High School for 14 years. Among his many achievements are the six degrees he earned and the 23 books that he wrote, among them Schaum's Outlines of Elementary Algebra, Modern Algebra, and Review of Elementary Algebra.

Great refresher

It's been 16 years since I studied geometry in school and I wanted to brush up a little bit. In typical Schaum's fashion, the material is presented without any needless commentary, or jokes, etc. There are tons of problems. I found the book to be up to the standards of Schaum's. I would definitely recommend it to people that want to learn geometry, or get a refresher. I'm not sure teens would like the book. It's not designed to coddle the reader by entertaining them with stories and anecdotes; although, there is a little bit of history in there.

I give it four stars two main reasons:
1) I reserve 5 for exceptional quality. I'm a tough grader.
2) There is no online errata that I'm aware of.

Schaum's Outline of Geometry

I got this book to help my granddaughter who is studying geometry in eighth grade. She has been using it a lot before the school year started. She says it has given her a big jump on the other students. I heartily recommend the whole Schaum's outline series. I used them through undergraduate and graduate school. They are definitely the best bang for the buck.

I had the second edition of this book for several years. This edition is even better. I have been using it to aid some of my students who need additional practice outside their textbooks.

About the Author
Walter Lippmann (1889 –1974) was an American intellectual, writer, reporter, and political commentator famous for being among the first to introduce the concept of Cold War. Lippmann was twice awarded (1958 and 1962) a Pulitzer Prize for his syndicated newspaper column, “Today and Tomorrow.” A meeting of intellectuals organized in Paris in August 1938 by French philosopher Louis Rougier, Colloque Walter Lippmann was named after Walter Lippmann. Walter Lippmann House at Harvard University, which houses the Nieman Foundation for Journalism, is named after him too. Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman used one of Lippmann's catch phrases—the "Manufacture of Consent"-- for the title of their book, Manufacturing Consent, which contains sections critical of Lippmann's views about the media. In Public Opinion, Lippmann noted that the stability the government achieved during the patronage era of the 1800s was threatened by modern realities. He wrote that a “governing class” must rise to face the new challenges. The basic problem of democracy, he wrote, was the accuracy of news and protection of sources. He argued that distorted information was inherent in the human mind. People make up their minds before they define the facts, while the ideal would be to gather and analyze the facts before reaching conclusions. By seeing first, he argued, it is possible to sanitize polluted information. Lippmann argued that seeing through stereotypes (which he coined in this specific meaning) subjected us to partial truths. Lippmann called the notion of a public competent to direct public affairs a "false ideal." He compared the political savvy of an average man to a theater-goer walking into a play in the middle of the third act and leaving before the last curtain.

A Classic on Political and Social Thought

Way back in 1922, Walter Lippmann analyzed the nature of public opinion with many valuable insights that still hold true today. Note that most of the historical references Lippmann uses to illustrate his theories are from World War I and surrounding events, and some aspects of the political environment of the time are totally irrelevant today. However, this book rises above the confines of its time. Lippmann dealt in an interdisciplinary method that is extremely rare, if not structurally impossible, in today's academic environment. His basic treatise is in the realm of political science but ably brings in supporting theories and knowledge from psychology, sociology, communications, history, and logic. Lippmann's then-current style of writing is also nearly impossible to find in today's social science writing, with a flowing prose loaded with references to classic literature and frequent use of imagined characters and scenarios. Part VI offers a surprisingly no-holds-barred examination of the American political system that is refreshingly free of today's unyielding us-and them ideologies. This feat of the intellect, just slightly outdated in its specific examples but not in its underlying insights, is a powerhouse treatise on how public opinion is constructed and influenced by social trends, politics, and media. In PUBLIC OPINION, we have 1 of the foundational texts in the forming of present day public relations. According to all I've read on Walter Lippmann, he was the most influential pundit of his era, so to read his assessment of the public's opinion & what it's worth & how it must be tamed, we (the readers) are being given access to the core elements that lead to what we know today as government & business propaganda.

Lippmann was part of the Creel Committee, whose job it was to sell the idea that America should get involved in World War I to the American people...so the importance of peeking into the thought processes behind that campaign of pro-war propaganda is a priceless opportunity.

If you wish to understand what those in power actually think of the public's importance in a democracy (or democratic republic), make sure you read this book...twice!

Today's Pundits have Nothing on this Guy...

In this book, the first pundit Walter Lippmann speaks about the journalism, democracy, and the American people - creating a picture that's not pretty but remains very true up until this day. Lippmann's style may be difficult for some, but those who endeavour to read will find it fascinating.

Through the book, Lippmann talks about how there is no real public opinion, how most people have a very limited view of the government, and how the government synthesizes complex views into either-or issues (i.e. "pro-life" v.s. "pro-choice"). The journalists, who should help the American people understand the issue, end up doing little at all. Lippmann offers no real solutions in this book, but for anyone who wants a wake-up call for what's wrong with the government, they should spurn Michael Moore and Ann Coulter and turn to this book.

This is the best manual for the sprinter I have found.
But it has little info on american models engine and transmission.
Wiring diagrams are easy to use without all other systems in the pictures.

Clearly-written and well dome analysis

This extremely-readable and to-the-point book should be read by anyone with a business major. The author is part of her nation's [pst= state economy generation, but she understands people and how to work with them, not to boss them around. Leaders inspire others to share their passion and work cooperatively. Managers pass along directives and expect them to be carried out.

Currently studying for my oral boards and this book is amazing. It's an easy read and covers the core topics very well. Almost each chapter goes over the list of steps to common procedures. I strongly recommend this book. I've been supplementing with How to Win, Pass Machine, and Camerons.

Great addition to surgery texts -- accessible, concise, accurate

This book is somewhere in between the quick recall books (e.g. NMS, Surgical Recall) and the larger classic reference texts (e.g. Sabiston, Cameron.) With that in mind, this book is perfect for senior medical or students or junior housestaff. Each chapter is 2-3 pages and walks thru a common case. What is highest yield (and what separates this book apart) is the each chapter has a table with 1. Key steps of the procedure (going thru set up, anatomical landmarks and moves) and 2. Common pitfalls to avoid. I couldn't be happier with this purchase, and think this will become the standard text that every med student reads on their surgery rotation and that every surgery resident owns. My one reservation is the size of the book -- would have preferred more a pocket size, then a text book size. Perhaps later editions will offer both.

This is the BEST book for general surgery oral exam

I recently took a general surgery oral exam and passed. I am not exaggerating when I say I could not have passed the exam without this book. It has been a few years since I passed the written exam and I am a cardiothoracic surgeon. I had many risk factors not to do well in the oral, however, this book reminded me of practical aspects of managing surgical patients. In addition, this book has information that you need in real life clinical scenario, such as how you should make intraoperative decisions, how you should follow postoperatively and as an outpatient, which not a lot of surgical textbook covers.

One of the biggest pros on this book is that almost every chapter has key points of surgical procedure summerized. It was very convincing because those were written by surgeons that they really do those in their practice, not by a surgeon who tries to summerize all aspects of what is asked on the board. This became a tremendous help since it can take good amount of time if you try to summerize by yourself.

There are a few things that could make this book even better. Although this book covers 123 clinical scenarios that have been frequently tested on the oral exam, there are some other common scenarios that this book is missing, such as hyperthyroidism, carcinoid tumor, etc. Complications after gastric surgery, such as afferent loop or efferent loop syndrome, should have been covered a little more in detail.

I can not thank this book enough. Among the books out there for oral exam, I loudly say that this is the best book.
