Very readable and enjoyable... Hope hospitals "get it" before I need one as a patient!

I "read" the audio version... very well done. Well written, just the right mix of theory and stories, and for the audio version, the reader was excellent.

And I find this book hopeful... as a physician with 30+ years in medicine, I have a grave fear of the time when I become a ward of the medical-industrial complex. In general, it is not patient-centric, nor in some cases, imbued with much common sense. This is a sad reality. This book won't fix all that ails us, but the ideas presented, and the spirit contained therein, are a great start.

A decent reading of an important book (for Hospital Executives)

This book is getting a little long in the tooth now...but if you're a hospital exec looking to get a better handle on your customer satisfaction / net promotor scores, it is essential in my opinion. It's a great reminder of the "early days" of customer sat in healthcare, and really sets the groundwork for things like Value Based Purchasing.

The book is a good read, easy and fast. It is written in a conversational tone and gives great, specific examples. It can be ACTED UPON quickly. I enjoy reading it.

However, I'm now finding that it's easier for me to "read" business books via audiobook. Great way to spend my time in the car. The conversational tone of this book really lends itself to the audio format. The narrator is the author, Fred Lee. He's good at conveying the meaning of his book and overall is good. Occasionally, he trips over words and his voice is not exactly "radio star" quality. And the music that leads in and out of each chapter is AWFUL. But these are minor complaints compared to the value I get from having these discs.

The audience for this product is tiny...but if you're in that audience, you NEED this (either CDs, book or both). It's time well-spent helping to refocus on what TRULY makes your customers (patients) loyal and satisfied.

I was just thinking it might be a bit more entertaining, but it still presents some great information that anyone can learn from

Excellent Resource for Teachers & Serious Students

This book is designed for a teacher as part of the "Green Books" American Sign Language series; however, it is a very useful guide to ASL Grammar and Culture for anyone studying American Sign Language seriously (I, myself, am not a teacher, but have a copy of the book).
I was introduced to the book when I first began learning sign language, and it was very confusing to me. I would have benefited, at the time, much better from an ASL dictionary or simpler sign book. My recommendation to those of you who have just begun learning (or would like to learn) ASL would be NOT to buy this book just YET! Start with something less daunting and sophisticated (after all, it is designed for those already familiar with ASL and preparing a class curriculum).
What the book will give you is an excellent explanation of the sociolinguistic nature of American Sign Language--something you typically will not receive from a ASL Dictionary. For example: how sentences are structured, topicilization, rhetorical questions, relative clauses, expression of time, pronominalization, subject and object usage, the use of classifiers, locatives ... to name a few.
All in all, this is a terrifically detailed, well researched, informative and valuable book; yet, not for a beginning student.

excellent resource for students

I went through an interpreter training program in the early 1980's, and this book was considered our 'bible' for the entire program. It is not meant as a stand-alone for learning ASL, but as an adjunct when taking classes on ASL or enrolled in an interpreter preparation program. Even though it was written many years ago, the content is still salient today and is an important resource on my bookshelf. As a practicing interpreter for 25 years, I frequently look at chapters when I am mentoring someone or forget how to explain something in particular. The information on Deaf culture is especially valuable as well.
The technical nature of the book is akin to explaining the linguistical nature of a spoken language, something critical to anyone learning ASL as a second language. I still see it used in programs today as a means of supplementing classroom lecture information. Only individuals serious about in-depth learning of American Sign Language will appreciate and benefit from this book. It is not fluff; learning the linguistic nature of ANY language requires dedication and time, and this applies to ASL as well. You cannot learn any language from a book, you learn it from associating with native users of that language. This book is excellent to use for the linguistic and theoretical basis for what you see and use when conversing with native users. You will not be disappointed if you use this in conjunction with classes and conversing with Deaf individuals whose native language is ASL. I highly recommend this book. It gives you a well-rounded education in the grammar of ASL in one handy reference. Forget 12 years of taking English classes from 1st. grade until you graduated high school. If you use this book as it is intended, it gives you all that information and more.

Ah ha! The missing link.

If you're looking at this book, you've probably already studied ASL to some degree and are looking to further develop your signing and/or teaching skills. You surely know that there is a large selection of introductory books on very basic signs, a number of available dictionaries - some barely adequate and some quite good, and a small number of dense, academic works that delve into various aspects of the linguistics of ASL. To me, at least, there seems to be a conspicuous gap: a scant few books go into any depth describing and teaching real-world ASL grammar.

The popular "Learning American Sign Language" skims the surface, and "Grammar, Gesture and Meaning in American Sign Language" goes into substantial depth, but reading this book produced the big "Ah ha!" moment for me. It's not glamorous, not cutting edge, but it doesn't have to be. Instead, it is well structured, includes an appropriate amount of pictures, illustrations, diagrams, etc. to break down the structure of a visual language into manageable pieces so that they can be understood and reassembled into expressions with real meaning and color. The book is on point and useful from the start.

Life is a journey, not a destination, but all the same, I wish I would have just found this book first - at the beginning of my search. I'll bet that you won't be disappointed with this one.

Romanus Cessario O.P. does an excellent job at bringing the theological virtues of faith, hope and love to life. He also discusses the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, temperance and fortitude. As a Catholic writer and public speaker, I find this book to be my "go-to" book for quotation citation on the theological and cardinal virtues. More recently, individuals of other religious traditions (Exhibit A being Madonna) have begun to dabble in the Zohar, and this edition is particularly geared to them. It is based on short selections rather than the full text, and it offers wonderful facing-page explanations of key concepts and terms, so readers will not have to dig through endnotes looking for information. Matt, a former professor of Jewish mysticism at Berkeley and author of The Essential Kabbalah, doesn't "dumb down" the more abstruse passages of the Zohar, and he provides a very effective introduction that outlines its importance for the reader.

First, it has awonderful foreword by Harvey, editor of the SkyLight Illuminationsseries, of which the book is a member. In it Harvey evocativelyintroduces a kabbalist named Ezekiel, who teaches Harvey about thepossibilities and power of the mystic tradition, generally andparticularly. Interested readers will be as exhilarated as Harvey isby Ezekiel's provocative statements. Next, the solid preface explainsthe Zohar 's origins, which aren't lost in the mists of time asmany believe, and basic concepts. The text proper is the Zoharwith commentary by translator Matt that explains references to theBible and Midrash and draws on the writings of Jewish philosophers forfurther illumination. About the Author

Daniel C. Matt is a leading authority on the Zohar and Kabbalah. He is the author of the best-selling The Essential Kabbalah (translated into seven languages); Zohar: The Book of Enlightenment; God and the Big Bang: Discovering Harmony Between Science and Spirituality (Jewish Lights); and Zohar: Annotated and Explained (SkyLight Paths). He was professor of Jewish spirituality for over twenty years at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, and he continues to lecture around the country on Jewish mysticism and spirituality. He is the author of the first nine volumes of the annotated translation The Zohar: Pritzker Edition, hailed as "a monumental contribution to the history of Jewish thought."

The finest short anthology of the Zohar

This work, a careful update of Matt's earlier edition of Zohar excerpts, provides an accurate and thoughtful translation of many of the most important sections of the Zohar, a primary text in the mystical tradition of the kabbalah. The Zohar itself is voluminous, and it has never been fully translated into English. This book, though, is short and just covers a few essential areas of the Zohar. While basic, it is not watered-down. It's a great place to start if you've recently heard about the Zohar and are wondering about it. There are a lot of unreliable and "fluffy" treatments filling the shelves these days -- this is the authentic article, prepared by one of the most highly regarded scholars in the field.

If you like this book, you might also be interested in the same translator's new, complete translation of the entire Zohar. It's being published volume-by-volume by Stanford University Press. But if you just want the highlights, if you just want to see what this text is about, then this Skylight edition is the way to go.

Selected passages with commentary

In the Foreword, series editor Andrew Harvey relates his interesting experience with a wise man in Israel who taught him about the seven wonders of Kabbalah, whilst in the Preface Daniel Matt explains the origin of this book of commentary, drawn from his volume for the Paulist Press. These are the most powerful passages from that book in a revised translation.

The introduction deals with the history and contents of the Zohar, a commentary on the 5 books of Moses written in the form of a mystical novel. The questions of its original author/s, the language, and the Ten Sefirot are also discussed here. I found this interpretation of the first words of Genesis very interesting, as well as the insight that the Zohar urges us to regain cosmic consciousness, a closer connection to the divine.

From a linguistic perspective, it is valuable to learn of the neologisms and the use of multiple connotations, oxymorons, puns, parables and puzzles in the text. A chart of the Sefirot is provided. Chapters 1 to 17 consist of selected passages from the Zohar on the right-hand page, with commentary on the left. Chapter titles include The Essence Of Torah, The Creation Of God, The Hidden Light, Adam's Sin, The Binding Of Abraham and Isaac, Jacob's Garment Of Days, the Secret Of Sabbath, The Aroma Of Infinity, God, Israel and Shekhinah, and The Wedding Celebration.

The book concludes with notes, a glossary, a bibliography and an index of Zohar Passages. I did not find this book very clear or accessible at first. It was only after I had read The Essential Zohar: The Source of Kabbalistic Wisdom by Rav P S Berg that I returned to this one and it made sense. For the novice, I recommend the work by Berg as it is a more comprehensive and cohesive introduction to this fascinating esoteric book.

Wings of fire

The ancient dragon Valdearg was briefly introduced in T.A. Barron's "Seven Songs." So guess what the antagonist of "The Raging Fires" is!

The third volume of this Arthurian fantasy epic introduces some nasty new beasties, magical threats and some explosive dragon action. Barron seems to have overcome his initial roughness, and allows the plot to flow as smoothly as his nature-based writing, as well as the introduction of some interesting new characters.

After barely saving his mother's life, Emrys Merlin is relaxing with his family... only to have their peace destroyed when a monstrous magic-sucking monster called a kreelix appears. They were supposedly extinct, but have somehow reappeared -- and to make matters worse, Valdearg (aka "Wings of Fire") has awakened from his slumber, and is on the warpath for whoever killed his hatchlings.

The problem is that there is a prophecy that Wings of Fire's clash with his old enemy (presumed to be a wizard) will result in both of them dying. So Merlin sets out to discover what is happening on "Fincayra's darkest day," and finds himself enmeshed with strange sorceresses, a magical conspiracy, a pair of deer-people, and eventually with the ancient dragon himself...

"The Raging Fires" sets aside the foresty Celtic symbolism of the previous two books, in favor of fire -- harps burn, lava burns, dragons blast fire, and homicidal anger rages out of control. He also seems to have exhausted his mythological store for the moment, because most of the magical goings-on in this book are pretty original creations.

Barron's writing sometimes gets a bit overlush, but it's loaded down with haunting, detailed moments (the deer-people's transformations), eerie threats, and the occasional moment of comic relief (the baby dragon). But the story is overall very grim, particularly since this is the first of Merlin's stories in which his death seems to be assured. Whether or not he will actually die, there's a dark cloud hanging over everything he does.

The biggest problem is perhaps the kreelixes -- they're an interesting idea, but they sound more like something out of Star Trek than Arthurian legend. I'm just saying.

Merlin is a little older and wiser in this one, and he seems to be feeling the first stirrings of romantic feelings for the bland deer-woman Hallia. And Valdearg is a wonderful antagonist -- he'a an aggressive killer, but he's not evil and at times he even shows signs of dignity and endearing sentiment.

"The Raging Fires" temporarily ditches the Celtic myth'n'legend, in favor of dragons and a few new inventions of the author's. A solid, richly-written fantasy.

"The Dragon Avenges His Dreams Yet Unhatched..."

The third book in T.A. Barron's Merlin saga, chronicling the adventures of the young wizard before his famous exploits in the Arthurian legends, continues on from The Lost Years and The Seven Songs of Merlin. Merlin has been reunited with his mother and sister on the magical island of Fincayra and is looking forward to continuing his learning in the magical arts. But it is not to be, for elsewhere on the island the ancient dragon Valdearg has awakened from his decades-long slumber to discover that his unhatched eggs have been destroyed - and he's not happy.

A prophesy hints that Merlin will be the one to end the scourge of the dragon - but at the cost of his own life. Furthermore, he will need the precious gemstone known as the Galator to complete his quest, a treasure that he bartered away back in the first book to save a friend's life. Further trouble arises in the form of Urnalda, a dwarf-enchantress who has the power to strip Merlin of his magical power, and the kreelix - monsters that feast on magical abilities. Beset on all sides by these opponents, Merlin struggles to complete his goals and face the terrible dragon before it's too late.

Barron keeps the story flowing at a brisk pace, helped along by the short chapters and the breezy prose. Told in first-person narration by Merlin himself, there is a sense of immediacy to the proceedings, as well as rich descriptions of the landscape and travailing of Fincayra. Old characters are present (requiring foreknowledge of the previous books) and new ones are introduced, and the tapestry of this land and its history has further layers and details added to it. Hallia takes the place of Rhia as Merlin's female companion, but the deer-woman is not quite as interesting or endearing as the forest-girl, though Valdearg the dragon (also known as "Wings of Fire") makes for an intriguing not-quite villain.

Although the knowledge that Merlin gleans and the development that he goes through is not as pitch-perfectly mapped out as that of Taran in Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain (a series that I was continually reminded of whilst reading the Merlin saga) it's clear that he's on his way to becoming the wise wizard of the legends. I can easily imagine this youth as the mentor of a future King Arthur. Though there are twists and turns throughout the story (some clever, some pedestrian) it is ultimately Merlin's kind heart that sets him apart from the rest of his kind, and Barron is clever enough to sow some seeds that will no doubt come to fruition in future books.

Young readers who enjoy the likes of Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia will probably appreciate Barron's take on a young Merlin, and though they don't *quite* reach that level of classic storytelling, they're enjoyable and well-written fantasy for the younger crowd. "The Fires of Merlin" suffers a little from middle-book syndrome, with what with a lot of follow-on from previous books and set-up for future installments, but will have readers eager to press on with The Mirror of Fate.

Be warned that this publication used to be titled The Fires of Merlin. There's bound to be some confusion, so make sure you double-check exactly what you're getting before ordering. Other than the title-change, the text remains entirely the same.

GREAT, not perfect...

While I found it quite difficult to sympathize with Cady and her ability to be so, entirely self absorbed, I did think the pacing of the story was very, very great. The reveal of the secret was a little confusing at first because the writing style of Lockhart made things not meant to be taken literally very hard to not be taken literally. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the mysterious plot and actions of all the characters. Gat was the only one I actually related to, but in the end, I was left feeling sad and angry with all of them and the way things ended. The values and themes discussed in the book are very worthwhile and deep (however cheesey that may sound), and it was nice to see a mention of racism and race in general in this book. Very emotional, gripping read--I totally recommend it.

Amazing book. Review includes spoilers

I really enjoyed this book. Whenever I stopped reading it because I had to do real life things I kept thinking about it. I enjoy books that make me think and aren't just mushy gushy love stories or just plain confusing. I can see why people would be upset with the ending. But honestly if you were reading the same story as I am then you would notice the clues.

If you don't want to be spoiled then stop reading now.

I mean seriously. One of the aunts moved out of her house because she couldn't bear to live it anymore. The main house was leveled and rebuilt. No one ever interacts with the Liars besides Cady. Her mother tells her she is spending too much time alone. The Littles are acting out. The twins steal pills and read about paranormal stuff. One little gets scared at night and thinks the house is haunted. Merrin is sick and doesn't get better. The Liars magically appear when Cady wants them and never clean up after themselves. Cady doesn't remember what happened for a whole summer. The aunts are pretty much drunk 24/7 and being nice to each other because they are all grieving. The Liars ignore Cady when she doesn't return. Her aunt walks around the island crying into her son's jacket and keeps asking Cady if she has seen him. His little brother has nightmares so fierce he wakes up at night screaming while his mother wanders around aimlessly. Grandfather keeps calling Cady Merrin. Merrin talks about never getting married or having a boyfriend. Gat talks about being normal and loving Cady but how messed up it really is. They all get ridiculously sad about never being able to visit foreign countries despite being stupid rich.

I mean if that isn't enough clues of what happened Summer 15 then I don't know what book you were reading. It wasn't a love story. It was a tragedy. I didn't know the details but I sure as heck knew what happened. I'm sure there are some that I didn't list but I think you get the point.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It did a good job of keeping my interest and showing what social classes and the like can do to young minds. It showed the family feuds over money that seem pointless until you don't know any other way.

It's a big mind game and I enjoyed playing.

Best book I've read in a long time!

This is one of those books that you either hate it or fall in love with it. Let me just say I fell in love with everything about this book

My review is totally spoiler free not even giving names because this book is a mystery and that's how it should be. The best way to read this is to go into it blind.

I went into this book totally blind, and it was nothing like what I expected it to be based off the cover and the back. I expected high school cliques or a love story. Not even close

This book is just written so beautifully.

This book is about a gilded family. They are rich and happy, they are everything that a family should be. They all love each other and they have so much fun. At least from the outside.

They are broken, but they can't let it show. They will do what ever they can to hide there flaws. Lie.
They lie a lot, some big lies some little.

Every summer the beautiful family goes to their summer houses on a private island. They all reunite in the summer leaving all their past problems that happened through the year behind. The past is the past and it is never to be spoken of again.

The writing in this book is so descriptive it felt like I was there with them on the island. It took me to another place and not a lot of books can do that for me.

This book is about bribery lying and hiding. But this book is also about love, sacrifice, friendship, joy, and serenity.

Through out this book there is a big mystery not revealed until the end. It is not what I expected at all and I'm pretty good at solving mysteries. The ending actually left me surprised, and crying. After reading this I couldn't stop thinking about it. That's why I'm writing this review. I've never written a review in my life but let me just say this book is the first book that has deserved one.

Engaging and insightful

This book has lots of fascinating information about emotions in the workplace. It is presented in a very accessible style that kept my interest consistently with plenty of new scientific evidence to support the theories. I particularly like the 'managing with heart' section that includes topics such as: teamwork; decreased productivity; cost to bottom line; cost effectiveness of emotional intelligence; the benefits of being emotionally competent versus the consequences of stress and emotional obliviousness; & how to criticize effectively. My favorite thing I learned? Laughter & smiles are the most contagious emotion, much more so than depression. I highly recommend this book if you want to create a better workplace!

How leaders can "help people to get and stay in the brain zone [flow] where they can work at their best"

These are articles selected by Daniel Goleman to be anthologized in a single volume as his research continues on one of the most important and least understood business subjects: emotional intelligence (EI). Opinions are divided as to its origins. My own opinion is that the distinctions between intellectual and emotional capabilities can be traced back at least to Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Charles Darwin has much of value to say about the importance of emotional expression and E.L. Thorndike introduced the term "social intelligence" which was later characterized as "people skills." Others such as David Wechsler, David McClelland, Howard Gardner, David Payne, Peter Salovey and John Mayer, Reuven Bar-On, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee have also made significant contributions but, in my opinion, Goleman has done the most valuable research on emotional intelligence (usually in collaboration with those whom he always acknowledges, such as Boyzatis and McKee) and then, in a series of brilliant books and dozens of articles, helped more people than anyone else ever has to apply the EI principles in all of their relationships, including but certainly not limited to the workplace.

What we have in this volume are nine essays, accompanied by an Appendix in which Goleman briefly shares new insights with regard to several leadership competencies previously discussed in one of his books, Primal Leadership (March 15, 2002): self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Whatever their size and nature may be, all organizations need leadership at all levels and in all areas. If viewed as "gardeners," C-level executives should have a "green thumb" that enables them to "grow" leaders for all those levels and areas. The aforementioned core competencies will provide a framework for that immense ly important process.

As I completed my reading of this book, I was again reminded of my favorite passage in Lao-Tzu, Tao Te Ching:

"Learn from the people
Plan with the people
Begin with what they have
Build on what they know
Of the best leaders
When the task is accomplished
The people will remark
We have done it ourselves."

Therein lies the power of emotional intelligence and anyone is capable of developing it and then continuously strengthening it. For those preparing for a career in business or have only recently embarked on, and who aspire to become leaders, this book is a "must read" -- as is its companion volume, The Brain and Emotional Intelligence, both published by More Than Sound (2011). I also highly recommend the aforementioned Primal Leadership as well as LEADERSHIP: A Master Class, a set of nine DVDs which provide Daniel Goleman one-on-one conversations with several "masters" of thought leadership: Daniel J. Siegel ("The Leader's Mind"), Warren Bennis (The Socially Intelligent Leader"), Erica Ariel Fox ("Getting Beyond Yes"), Claudio Fern�ndez-Ar�oz ("Talent Strategy"), Bill George ("Authentic Leadership"), Teresa Amabile ("Create to Innovate"), Howard Gardner ("Today's Leadership Imperative"), and George Kohlrieser ("High Performance Leadership"), a set also produced by More Than Sound (2012)

A Must Read for all Leaders

If you are over 40, your introduction to work probably included someone warning you, "The boss might not always be right, but remember he is always the boss." It was not that long ago when command and control was the accepted standard for managing a business.

There are a number of shifts that have made the top down, command and control style of management much less effective. First the type of work has continued to shift to that of knowledge worker. And the younger workers have much different attitudes and expectations about what they want from and are willing to accept in their work.

As local and even national boundaries have less control over where work is being done, all businesses are becoming more competitive. Therefore, it is imperative that leaders find the most effective and efficient ways to inspire and engage their workers.

One of the crucial factors in attracting and retaining a highly engaged and effective workforce is the emotional intelligence abilities of the leadership. According to Daniel Goleman, the author, "Nearly 90 percent of the competencies that distinguished outstanding performers was attributable to emotional intelligence factors rather than purely cognitive abilities."

You will gain an extremely good overview of what EI is and its impact on the workers, their performance and the resulting profits of the company.

One of the better chapters in the book details the six leadership styles, how each style impacts the culture of the organization and when it is appropriate to use. One thing I knew from observation but found interesting to have confirmed is the damage done by command and control type leadership. The six styles are: Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting and Commanding (or coercive).

If your goal is to better understand what it takes to bring people together and get the most out of them, this is a very important book. It is rather short, about 100 pages, is easy to read - can be read in about three hours - and contains a substantial amount of information.

If you have been meaning to read any of Mr. Goleman's books but haven't got around to it, this will give you the heart of much of his writings in a rather short and easy to consume book. The book is short but the lessons are very valuable. Even if you are not a employee/employer, these lessons apply to all social interactions. You need to really understand the importance of Social and Emotional Intelligence and this is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get a good working knowledge of the subject.

Highly recommended.
