Su objetivo, difundir la palabra de Dios en Rusia. Pero al poco tiempo de establecerse en la ciudad maderera de Teplaya Gora fue descubierto y detenido por la polic�a secreta. Acusado de espionaje fue trasladado a la temida prisi�n moscovita de Lubianka, donde permaneci� durante los a�os de la Segunda Guerra Mundial para ser condenado posteriormente a 15 a�os de trabajos forzados en los campos de prisioneros de Siberia. Finalmente, en 1963, fue intercambiado por dos esp�as rusos y pudo volver a Estados Unidos.

En el libro, �l mismo nos desvela la raz�n de su supervivencia -el total abandono a la voluntad de Dios- y da testimonio de su vida de oraci�n, gracias a la cual venci� la soledad, el dolor, el miedo y la desesperaci�n, y aprendi� a convertir unas circunstancias y un trabajo inhumanos en un valor positivo que le acercaba a Dios.
En 1990 se abri� su proceso de beatificaci�n, siendo actualmente Siervo de Dios.

Walter Ciszek (1904-1984) fue un sacerdote norteamericano de origen polaco, perteneciente a la Compa��a
de Jes�s. Entr� en el noviciado jesuita en 1928, y, siguiendo la petici�n de P�o IX de que fueran sacerdotes a Rusia despu�s de la Revoluci�n Bolchevique, solicit� ir a este pa�s. En 1934 fue enviado a Roma para estudiar liturgia y teolog�a rusa en el "Russicum", y en 1937 fue ordenado sacerdote por el rito bizantino con el nombre de Vladimir. De all� fue enviado a la misi�n polaca de Al'Bertin, desde donde entr� en Rusia clandestinamente, como relata este libro. Despu�s de su liberaci�n se dedic� a su trabajo sacerdotal y fue profesor en el Centro de Estudios Orientales Juan XXIII de Fordham University.

The book, entitled 'I Am Jerusalem', is the memoir of retired dental surgeon John Tleel. Born in Jerusalem, to a long-standing Palestinian Greek Orthodox family, Tleel of life in Jerusalem from the 1930's through the 1970's. The memoirs are replete with personal events in the life of Dr. Tleel; for example, he describes taking a room as a boarder in Beirut while studying dentistry, conversations with the patients who come to him to be treated, raveling in the Middle East before and after the establishment of Israel, and learning Hebrew after the 1967 Israeli occupation of the city. Larger events which effected the entire population of Jerusalem are described from his own perspective-- for example, taking refuge in the Old City of Jerusalem during the 1948 war, attending 'Sebt an- Nour' on the Saturday before Easter in the church of the holy sepulcher, and being under curfew so the Israeli census could count the population of the city in June of 1967. In general, the book is written for someone with limited knowledge of the Palistinian-Isreali conflict. Tleel often gives basic background on various issues either before or after telling a related story. In addition, the book is written from a distinctly Christian perspective. For example, 'As imperfect beings as we all are, we should continuously pray and ask God the common Father to show us the way of accepting one another'. Other sections of the book are fascinating and useful for everyone, including persons who are extremely knowledgeable of this period of history. For example, Tleel details the little-documented changes in Jerusalem after 1984 War -- the closure of Jaffa Gate and the New Gate, the influx of refugees into the old city, and the efforts of the monasteries to temporarily house them. He also describes the days of the 1967 war and seeing the Israelis for the first time in the streets of Jerusalem. Furthermore, Tleel was the dentist of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch and other clergy and tells many personal stories about them as well as his observations of them and events during highly significant political occasions. At least one third of the book is devoted to the Israeli occupation to the city following the 1967 war. Tleel is a self-described proponent of peace , and in the book he talks about what he sees as many of the lost chances of peaceful settlement to the conflict. To this end he describes meetings and organizations he participated in with Israelis. Critical of both the Arab policies and the Israeli occupiers, he sees Jerusalem as an eternal city, not to be ruled or governed by anyone permanently. The book is entertaining and at times very successful in creating a vivid and moving description of an event or analysis of a situation. For example, 'Jerusalem after the 1967 war became a physically united city, but at the same time became schizophrenic mentally. The Jewish population of the western section is always celebrating and rejoicing and the Arab and Eastern part is in deep mourning; when our city is silent, asleep and in complete darkness, our next-door neighbors are dancing and singing in their streets which are decorated with banners and multicolored bulbs.' The book is a readable and interesting picture of Jerusalem during the significant times before the partition of the city, the 1948 War, the Jordanian regime, and continuing through the Israeli occupation of the remainder of Jerusalem in 1976. It also provides a unique perspective on the Greek Orthodox community through the eyes of Dr. Tleel who is one of its most active lay members.

About the Author
Dr. John N. Tleel was born in Beit Jala on August 3, 1928. He is Rum (Greek) Orthodox Palestinian. In 1945, he graduated from the Greek Orthodox Gymnasium (Classical Secondary School) of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem in the Old City of Jerusalem. In 1949, he received the Diplome De Docteur En Chirurgie Dentaire de la Faculte Francaise de Medecine de Beyrouth. He is the founder, owner, and editor of the monthly Al - Zambaka (To Triphyllo) magazine. For two decades (1952 - 1972), this multi lingual periodical served the various communities of Jerusalem. From 1965 until 1985, he represented the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem at the Middle East Council of Churches as a lay delegate. He is founder member of the National Christian Association, the contributor of the essay My Jerusalem to the book entitled Jerusalem City of the Ages, published by the American Academic Association for Peace in the Middle East (1987), and the author of the Ecumenical Life in Jerusalem, a study sponsored by the World Council of Churches (1991). He translated from Greek into English the five Memoranda of Constantine Mavrides (The Siege of the Old City of Jerusalem from May 14 until December 15 of 1948), published in the book entitled Jerusalem 1948, by the Institute of Jerusalem Studies and Badil Resource Center (1999). John Tleel is the author of I Am Jerusalem, a self published memoir (2000). He also wrote a number of articles concerning the Holy City of Jerusalem, and extracts from this book appeared in various publications. Dr. John Tleel is a recipient of several awards and decorations.

Personal account of Jerusalem

A highly personal story about one man, his family and his city in a time of war. John Tleel is a resident of the Old City of Jerusalem. He was 20 when the 1948 war broke out that pitted 5 Arab armies against the new state of Israel. As a member of the Greek/Arab Orthodox he was in Beirut at the time. His house was in the `new city' just across the walls from the Old City. During the course of fighting it was destroyed and he and five other families moved into the old city as `refugees' where he has remained since. A proud member of the Christian community of the Holy Land this book tells his story and the story of his community through the time of the British Mandate. Key insights are given into the culture of the Arab Christians and there history, particularly his family, which immigrated to Israel in the 17th century. A very personal account, of help to anyone interested in the period. It is tinged with political bias and his own views, but this makes it very personal, readable and accurate, in the sense that personal experience is accurate from the tellers point of view.

Only mediocre

The fluid dynamics portion of the book is rather well done, and provides a decent introduction to what can be a confusing topic. If the book was only that part I probably would have given it 5 stars. The thermodynamics portion really brings it down. The thermodynamics portion is almost useless. It does everything in an oversimplified way, preferring tables of values rather than properties and equations. I don't think it covers Gibbs free energy at all, and that's the basis of a lot of more advanced concepts. I had already taken an Applied Thermo/Physical Chemistry course before taking the course that used this book and found that much of what this book covers with regard to thermodynamics has little practical utility.

Missing index in back

The book was cheap, so I didn't expect much. I didn't really mind that all of the property tables were ripped out of the back because my professor had us buy that from a copy center anyways, but I was disappointed that 3/4ths of the index was ripped out with it. I feel that this should have been mentioned in a description.

a good textbook. only thing different is they dont put answers in the back of the book, instead they have them under the problem. and they dont do it consistantly. most books i've used will have answers to all the odd problems, this one does random ones. they do about half of the problems. all in all, its a good book.

"It is not our intention to turn Lewis's stories into sermons," say Bruner and Ware, authors of Finding God in the Lord of the Rings. "But we do hope to draw spiritual insights from the faith that inspired their author and informed their plots." The authors use selected scenes from the Narnia Chronicles to open each of the more than two dozen short, thematic chapters of this book. These chapters address spiritual themes that many Christians can relate to: why do bad things happen to good people? How does the Holy Spirit work in the lives of the faithful? What should people do with feelings of disappointment in God? Those who haven't yet read the entire series may be confused by the examples given here, which jump quickly among the Narnia books without always identifying which novel is serving as a chapter's opening illustration. And despite the authors' determination not to reduce Lewis's Chronicles to mere sermons, many of these chapters feel like superficial narrative preaching, with a story, a brief meditation and a final take-away thought for reflection. Still, some of the authors' observations are insightful, and the chapters are short enough that the book could even be used as a month-long collection of daily devotions.

About the Author
Kurt Bruner is a graduate of Talbot Seminary and author of books with combined sales of over 400,000 copies. Kurt is madly in love with his wife, Olivia, and their four children, with whom he lives in the shadows of the snow-capped Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Jim Ware graduated from UCLA in 1976 with a B.A. in Classics. After marrying Joni, he enrolled at Fuller Theological Seminary, emphasizing theology and Semitic languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Ugaritic) and eventually earning an M.A. in Biblical Studies. In 1991 Jim and family relocated with Focus on the Family from Southern California to Colorado Springs, where they currently make their home. He enjoys everything about life in the shadow of Pikes Peak.

Great devotional for lovers of Narnia

I love this book! I know those Narnia books better than I know my own, so I was skeptical that the book would tell me anything new. But I've gotten a LOT out of the parallels the authors outline. I never considered the spiritual meaning of Father Christmas breaking through the White Witch's winter. Or the Pevensies being "drawn into" Narnia by Queen Susan's horn in PRINCE CASPIAN. The authors don't simply cite Biblical parallels - they outline spiritual truths exemplified in some of my favorite passages, and they use many of Lewis' other writings to support their points. I highly recommend this for lovers of Narnia looking for a great devotional book.

An excellent anc concise evaluation.

Finding God in the Land of Narnia is by the same authors who gave us Finding God in Lord of the Rings. An interesting duo of books as C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkein were Christian frinds who had a great influence on each other. Though Kurt Bruner is credited in the Amazon listing, he is again ably assited by Jim Ware and I wish we knew more about these two very excellent authors. They reveal an understanding of the use of fantasy to teach the basic tenets of Christianity. Though the emphasis today is on the first book due to the film, this is an excellent handbook to the series. There are many other good ones, however this book is concise and excellent to give one who has just seen the excellent Disney film on the first Narnian book. There are quotes by Lewis from other books which should encourage readers to get into all the great books this master of theology produced.

Good but not great

I found this book very good but not as nearly as insightful as other books on the subject. The chapters just seemed to end out of nowhere. The authors should have decided if they were writing a devotional or just a book on Narnia because I felt like they were trying to do both and it just didn't come together.

That being said it is a good book. A nice touch is the simple fact that it touches on all of the Chronicles. You get at least a tidbit from each and every book in the series.

Interesting Telling of Axeman Tale with Dramatic Ending

Interesting telling of the axeman story. There is solid evidence backing up the direction the author takes this fascinating story. It differs from the other rote accounts in that it proposes a realistic solution to the puzzle and is well written. Edwards introduces a perspective the other authors haven't -- one that makes his account plausible, especially when it is dramatized.
