Before Luke came into his life, all Ben cared about was skateboarding, and whether his father would ever remember that he was alive. Then there was Luke, and it felt like he was being carried along on some sort of wave. But then Luke died, and everyone at school thinks it’s his fault. Maybe it is. The Fall charts the lives of three boys as they deal with the death of their friend and brother. One turns to alcohol to escape his guilt. Another looks to a gang to replace what he’s lost. Ben needs to find a way to reconcile his role in Luke’s death and prove that he was not to blame. He must also learn that the man he will become is his to define.

About the Author
Colleen Nelson examines the consequence of choice in her novels, through believable teen characters in juxtaposing situations and social structures. She has lived in Japan and New York City, but currently resides with her husband in Winnipeg.

The Fall by Colleen Nelson was a pretty powerful read for me. It shows the way a death can affect different people in different ways. Where in one character, it gave him the strength to finally stand up for himself, in another it caused a downward spiral from which it seems there is no turning back, and in another, it strengthened a bond that was lost a long time ago.

Ben's love for skateboarding is something that he can turn to, to escape his hurt and pain caused by a non-existent father who disappoints him time and time again, and with hopes and aspirations of being sponsored and becoming a pro skater, there isn't much that will stop him from doing what he loves.

After a run in with school bullies Taz, Luke, and Cory, an act of "kindness" from Ben causes Luke to start befriending Luke. Unfortunately for Ben, hanging with Luke and his crew is not really his scene...drinking, drugs, and the trouble. But a fight with his best friend Tess is the deciding factor in Ben's decision in hanging out with them.

But in the blink of an eye, Ben's pretty quiet life is turned upside down after a tragic accident. But the accident doesn't only affect Ben. It affects the new group he's been hanging with, and some deal with it worse than others. Some end off veering down the wrong path, and into a darkness that sucks them deeper and deeper.

The Fall by fellow Winnipegger, Colleen Nelson, is a read that captured my attention and held it. Even though the book is a fairly quick read, the book ended pretty quick for me as I was completely engrossed in the story, and in the lives of the main character.

All of them have problems at home, which some readers will be able to connect with. Author, Colleen Nelson, does a fantastic job in showing the different lifestyles that these boys come from. The storyline in The Fall is one that cause many different emotions to come to surface. The way in which she shows just how awful fellow classmates can be is pretty shocking. How quickly their impressionable minds can be so quickly swayed was pretty shocking...and to be honest...very real.

I found my emotions running wild while reading The Fall. The way in which the author was able to spin my emotions sadness to happiness to fear in the blink of an eye was fantastic and left my head spinning. Her detailed descriptions of various events as they unfolded were done so well, that you can't help but feel like you're part of the story. I do wish that there was more in end. It ended pretty sudden, and left some questions unanswered for me. I know that there's enough information presented that the reader can come to their own conclusions, but I still found myself wondering what happens to these characters.

I personally feel like this is a book that readers everywhere should experience. To see the impact of death, and to witness the strengths that people didn't know they had until after tragedy strikes.

A visual pleasure

I had recently read "The Developing Mind" by Dan Siegel (an excellent but slow reading book because it is crammed with interesting data). I decided I wanted a book where I could visualize what goes on in what parts of the brain. This book is it: Great pictures and comprehensive easy-to-read summaries of the functions of all parts of the brain.

Carter's Map Is A Tour de Force!

I am a retired neurobiologist who teaches a short course for adult learners entitled "An Operator's Guide To The Brain." I have used dozens of books from which to draw material, as well as my own research experiences on the cellular biology of neurons. None of these books is as valuable to me as Carter's "Mapping The Mind." The graphics are superb, and the layout of the book, where text, text boxes, the words of specialists, and graphics, are used to drive home the message, is remarkably creative. The information presented is very up-to-date, and there is so much to learn that the book lends itself to revisiting over and over. Of all my "brain" books, this is the one I would keep if only one had to be chosen. No doubt some will argue that the layout isn't as integrated and coherent as it might be, what with text boxes popping up here and there to interrupt word flow, and others might quibble about Carter's take on this or that, on the whole this is a truly remarkable book. In ten years some of it will be outdated by new findings in a fast-moving field, but the work nevertheless is truly inspired.

Interesting but some points debateable/probably wrong

This book contains alot of good information about the functions and pathways used in the brain. But I think there are a number of areas where I disagree with her conclusions and those of at least one boxed "expert" reports. The boxed expert is Steven Mithren from the University of Reading. He speculates that racism may have arisen because H. Sapiens Sapiens, with advanced "social and technical intelligence" may confuse the social (fellow man) with technical objects which provides the potential for some races to believe that other races are inferior to others because of a mixing of thoughts about humans, animals and objects. He believes our social/technical knowlegde provides a potential to treat others as objects. "There is no compulsion to do this, simply the potential for it to happen." When it comes to human thought, there is the potential for anything to happen. He points out that this has happened throughout human history. The tendency to see others as objects already has a diagnosis and its not "Cognitive Fluidity." Its Antisocial personality disorder. Its something hard to prove either way but it seems like a speculation that few good scientists would engage in.

When the author discusses "theory of mind" she believes it is an innate human ability to know what is in another person's mind. That is not literally true. Theory of mind is when we begin to realize that people have different thoughts and attitudes than we do. It also, depending on the definer, may include the ability to infer what other people are thinking because of what they say and how they act. We never know what is in another person's mind even if they tell us directly. As people mature they begin to realize that behavior is generally a better indicator of a person's state of mind than what they say but for some, this comes fairly slowly.

She also thinks the case of Phineas Gage gives the example of a brain module gone bad. Phineas Gage had a massive amount of brain tissue damage, primarily in the inhibitory prefrontal lobes but it was not limited to that area, or even a "module." Gage underwent a significant personality tranformation and had a very hard time with any long-term goals or goal directed behavior. Buy he had not developed a "complete inability to direct or control himself." His prefrontal lobes were gone which lessens our ability to inhibit inappropriate behavior but I don't think the result was an "Id gone wild." He didn't go on a massive crime wave nor was he a serial rapist. He had some control, but he had lost much. Gage is seen as a victim of a sluggish (or non-existent) brain module. This then raises the question should the Gage's of today, relapsing drug addicts and alcoholics be unworthy of sympathy and does putting repeat criminals in jail really the thing to do to those whose module is merely sluggish? First drug addicts and alcoholics in recovery don't want sympathy. They appreciate empathy but sympathy puts them in a "one down" position. Should recidivist criminals be put in jail? As of now, we don't have good alternatives. Would the author like a repeat rapist moving in next door or a child molester helping her children cross the street because he got a job as a crossing guard. I think unlikely. Regardless of a "bad childhood" or "bad modules" we are responsible for our behavior and sometimes that behavior warrants punishment and removal from society

Too often she does what she says are the thing that scientists engaged in brain mapping loathe. She seems to often ignore the qualifying phrases that scientists use when they are uncertain, like "could be involved in" "might play a part in" or "offers a plausible mechanism." A good scientist would realize how such minimizing phrases make what may appear to the uninformed as fact, are actually an admission of "we really don't know."

She also proposes that when the mind is mapped completely, we will know everything there is to know about the mind. She states when the map is known, "we will be able to target psychoactive treatment so finely that an individual's state of mind (and thus behavior) will be entirely malleable." Sweeping assumptions like that are why neuroscientists don't like journalists at their conferences, though Ms. Carter rationalizes a different reason. "It may even be possible to alter individual perception to the extent that we could...live in a state of virtual reality, almost entirely unaffected by the external environment." She then says since we seek mind altering drugs and sensatition seeking this would be the culmination of an "old ambition." We have people who live unaffected (we think) by external reality--catatonics. A virtual life unimpeded by the messiness of reality may seem to some desirable but I'll pass.

There are other if not mistakes, further examples of what a journalist can do with superficial understanding of the subject. I'm surprised her physician consultant didn't question some of her claims and inferences. There are more exampes of unwarranted conclusions, biased language and frank errors but read it for yourself. I could be wrong.

If you're not hung up on literal accuracy and don't mind excessive speculation, this book is still pretty good and I would recommend it, if you can put up with some of her conclusions that are really just potentials and possibilites which she at times confuses with facts

Nitpicking

Started off slow, but the second half of the book definitely made up for it.

A thing that bugged me was that there didn't seem to be a recharge period. It seems like Max is constantly wary, constantly pondering, constantly being bombarded with new information. Ohh and he never seems to have any time to farm.

I just wish there would be a time skip and then a summary explaining the stuff that happened in the meantime.

Also the battle scenes are a bit dry with a lot of vague language; things like: ohh someone got killed, someone screamed, a number of people got killed, etc. It just doesn't make the battle exciting. I want to know what the enemy is thinking and what the allies are thinking. I want to see a better picture of the troops. For example, 300 mages, 1000 swordsmen, 200 knights etc. I want to see some really tough opponents among the random trash be highlighted. But I understand that this is first person point of view novel, I just think even from a first person point of view the novel could still have more clear and precise language, and not vague unclear language that just skims through the battles.

It would also be awesome to see what the effects of Max's skills are on other people.

I would also love to see a map of AlterWorld. Also, are there like local monarchs or is there any government at all in AlterWorld. These things are just very vague.

It would also be cool to see Max's stats and skills and how much damage they do. For example, when he buffed up to 19000hp, i can't even figure out if it's a lot or not because I don't know how much damage he takes from attacks. And even during battle we aren't aware of how much damage he takes and what skills the opponents use.

I usually don't like first person point of view novels, but this story is just so interesting. But I still think it would be much better if it was in third person.

Anyway, the story is really awesome!!! But a lot of the things are very vague and there doesn't seem to be any order to things. For example, even the clan specifics are unknown. I would love to know how many people total they have, what are the other titles besides the guild master Max. The necessary specific of the clan, the cities, the clusters etc., are unspecified. for example what are the top clans within the city, cluster, and Alterworld? Where does Children of the Dark rank? How does Children of the Dark compare to other clans? Who is the top ranked player in the cluster? What's his level? How does Max compare to him?

It just seems the author throws in a lot of information that has no meaning because there isn't anything to compare it to. For example, A million gold means nothing if we don't know how much gold it takes to buy anything. We don;t know if that's a lot or that's not enough because we don't have anything to compare it too. Same things go for Max's equipment and stats because we don't get the average equipment of the people or the average of their stats.

The story and the progress is the best, which is why I gave it 5 stars, but the story lacks details and crucial norms and standards that could make it 100x better.

I would love to see something like, "The Russian cluster has x number of cities, x number of citizens, average level etc." Those things are what makes the clans and characters stand out from everyone else.

best book ive read in years

the best book in the series, by far. i loved the first three books in this series. but this one took it up a notch. ive read 1000,s of books in my life. this book is in my all time top 5. the world building, the characters, the action are all great. even if you never played a video game in your life, you should get this series. i wish i could give it 6 *

I can't wait for the next one

While I find some issues with the pacing of the story, I still enjoy the book immensely. LitRPG is quickly becoming one of my favorite genres. I hope to see more Play to Live books as well as more authors putting forth their own works.

I do hope the books slow down a little with the protagonists leaps in power. At this point he needs to even out a little or his struggles become meaningless as he already seem to be breezing through one conflict after another.
