Simple Kabbalah: A Simple Wisdom Book (Simple Wisdom (Conari)), by Kim Zetter

In Simple Kabbalah, journalist and Jewish scholar Kim Zetter outlines the history of this mystic tradition, the main tenets of its belief system, and explains its central symbol, the Tree of Life. She then shows how to practice the wisdom of Kabbalah in everyday life through meditation and exercises for calming the mind and sharpening awareness. As we gradually absorb this ancient form of knowledge, we see how it affects every aspect of our lives, from attitudes about work and the environment to our social and personal interactions.

Despite its popularity at cocktail parties and in the media, few people genuinely understand what Kabbalah is. Unlike traditional Judaism, Kabbalah views God as a divine source of light, energy, and love, ever present in the physical world, rather than a patriarchal diety.

Kabbalah practitioners look beyond a literal interpretation of the Hebrew Bible for information about the soul; the nature of God, Creation, and the spiritual world; and humans' relationship to God and to each other.

From Publishers Weekly
To convert complex spiritual ideas to clear, lucid terms, Conari Press established the Simple Wisdom series. Simple Kabbalah follows comparable books on Feng Shui and Meditation in attempting to make esoteric topics readily accessible. Kabbalah, or "received tradition," is the Jewish mystical answer to all questions about God, people and the universe, supposedly hidden within the Hebrew Scripture. Kabbalists devote themselves to unraveling these secrets. Zetter, a journalist who specializes in Jewish affairs, began studying Kabbalah 10 years ago when she lived in Israel. She provides a straightforward explanation of Kabbalah and then offers a brief history, beginning in the 12th and 13th centuries, when the canonical text of Kabbalah, the Book of Zohar, appeared. Next, she sets forth key principles of Kabbalah and examines the text of Genesis to demonstrate the techniques Kabbalists use to unearth deeper meanings in received traditions. A chapter is devoted to the Tree of Life, the crucial symbol of Kabbalah, and the book concludes by exploring Kabbalah's significance for human behavior. The labyrinthine mysteries of Kabbalah remain perplexing, but this book is a useful introduction for those who wish to investigate arcane elements of Jewish theology and philosophy. (Nov.)

From Library Journal
This latest entry in the "Simple Wisdom" series has the courageous goal of attempting to make the notoriously forbidding practices and ideas of Jewish mysticism of the Kabbalah "simple." Zetter, a longtime journalist on Jewish and Israeli topics, has done an admirable job making Kabbalah accessible, with clear descriptions of the history of Kabbalah, its theology, and of the mystical Tree of Life at its center. Highly recommended, especially for collections where Jewish topics are in demand.

From Kirkus Reviews
A better title might be Jewish Mysticism for Dummies. Zetter, sometime contributor to the Los Angeles Times and Jerusalem Post, summarizes Jewish mystical teachings for an audience of nonspecialists and seekers. Her first five chapters provide an adequate introduction: she walks readers through some of the key kabbalistic texts, and we also meet figures from the history of Kabbalah. Readers will become acquainted with a few central kabbalistic conceptsthat God created and destroyed seven worlds before ours, that creation is ongoing, that God created the universe through ten ``emanations'' or ``forces'' (sefirot). The volume culminates in a final chapter about ``practical Kabbalah.'' Here, Zetter falls down. Ostensibly addressing the relevance Kabbalah has to postmoderns, the book degenerates into holistic pap: ``When we exhibit lovingkindness, we heal the world because acts of lovingkindness bring unification''; ``To experience a Gevurah [strength] consciousness, Kabbalists advise us to examine areas of our life that are out of balance . . . eating too much or watching too much TV . . . . Instead of eating a bag of potato chips for an evening snack, we might want to opt for something healthier.'' Instead of exploring, say, the ways Jews in the Jewish Renewal movement are integrating kabbalistic teachings into their worship services, Zetter ends on a weak note: Random Acts of Kindness with a faintly Jewish flavor. cabalists do it better
By JGC
Kim Zetter details the estoreric teachings of the Cabala in simple, yet detailed writings. This book is great for the beginner or for anyone looking for some info on the teachings of Cabala because it is very thought-out and informative. I first became interested in Cabala a few years ago. I was riding on a train and started talking to a lady sitting next to me who told me about these wonderful teachings. Unfortunately for me, and for people like me, there weren't many resources besides this book. I have seen and read other books but they were rather complicated and difficult to understand. This book taught me many things. One of the main messages I learned is that no book holds the key to happiness. I do not believe Cabala is a secret answer or cure for anything. Rather it will enhance your life if you invite it in.

A Delightful Read
By Rob C.
A delightful read with clarity that belies its size and page count, Simple Kabbalah is just that. An easy to understand, insightful and educational book on a very intricate and complicated subject. Detailed yet comprehensible, most every aspect of this mystical art is touch upon and illuminated. Though reading this book will not make anyone an expert on Jewish Mysticism, it conclusively dispels many of the misconceptions about Kabbalah and give an excellent historical account of its inceptions and beginnings as well as its current place and posture in todays world. All objectively and readily. Very well written in concise chapters with excellent illustrations, this is a great place to begin a journey into Kabbalah or to refresh your knowledge of this mystical art. You dont have to be Jewish and you dont have to be a scholar to enjoy and learn from this charming little book.

Survive the Night, by Danielle Vega

Stephen King meets Pretty Little Liarsin this pulse-pounding novel from the author of The Merciless

Just back from rehab, Casey regrets letting her friends Shana, Julie, and Aya talk her into coming to Survive the Night, an all-night, underground rave in a New York City subway tunnel. Surrounded by frightening drugs and menacing strangers, Casey doesn’t think Survive the Night could get any worse...

...until she comes across Julie’s mutilated body in a dank, black subway tunnel, red-eyed rats nibbling at her fingers. Casey thought she was just off with some guy—no one could hear her getting torn apart over the sound of pulsing music. And by the time they get back to the party, everyone is gone.

Desperate for help, Casey and her friends find themselves running through the putrid subway tunnels, searching for a way out. But every manhole is sealed shut, and every noise echoes eerily in the dark, reminding them they’re not alone.

They’re being hunted.

Trapped underground with someone—or something—out to get them, Casey can’t help but listen to Aya’s terrified refrain: “We’re all gonna die down here.”

Gr 9 Up—Casey just got out of rehab, and she is having trouble adjusting. When her old friend Shana shows up to whisk her away for a night of debauchery in New York City, Casey can't join her fast enough. Shana didn't tell her that they were going to see Sam, Casey's ex-boyfriend. Their awkward reunion is interrupted by news of an underground party that no one can find. Shana uses her powers of persuasion to get a location, but the group of friends soon discover that the "Survive the Night" party is a name that should be taken literally. Will any of them be able to get out alive? With this pulse-pounding, nail-biting novel from the author of The Merciless (Penguin, 2014), Vega creates immediately likable and relatable characters in shell-shocked Casey and free-spirited bad girl Shana. Seemingly innocuous moments become situations of disquieting terror, like when Casey tries to go after Shana in a warehouse in an attempt to find the party's location. Casey's past romance with Sam provides an interesting layer that keeps the book moving in its early quiet chapters. When events amp up toward the climax, the characters react to their predicament resolutely and continue their strong dynamic. VERDICT This book will appeal to fans of suspense who don't mind monsters popping out from behind every corner.—Ryan P. Donovan, Southborough Public Library, MA

Creeptastic & Weird! But GOOD!
By Jessica S.
Danielle Vega's Survive the Night was yet another creeptastic and surprising read! As the story started out I thought we'd be seeing another horror themes but Danielle completely surprised me with this one! It got pretty terrifying for the last 1/3 of the novel.

Casey just got out of rehab for drug overdose. It was a sad story of sorts. Casey was a soccer star and had a lot going for her. Then she injures her leg and is out for the season. While in the hospital she meets and befriends Shana. Through Shana, Casey loses a part of herself. She doesn't really realize this though. Soon she starts popping painkillers even when she doesn't need them and Shana's bad girl ways continue to fuel and strengthen the habit. And it's because of Shana, Casey ended up overdosing and was sent to rehab.

Though when our story begins, Casey doesn't seem 100% ready to change. She ditches her old friends to join Shana and the girls at a club where her ex-boyfriend is playing. Naturally, she still longs for him, especially since she was the "dumpee".

Soon the group of friends find themselves looking for the elusive Survive the Night party, because it's all the rage! That's when trouble starts to brew. Firstly, you cannot leave the party until sunrise or some such time. But when the police break it up early that's not the issue. Getting out it.

Before we're halfway through, Casey finds one of her friends dead. Murdered. It's pretty gory. And when the friends try to leave, they find themselves lost and no viable exits.

Word on the street is that there's a murderer on the loose. Someone was found dead and missing body parts at a previous party. Which this info only ante ups the danger. But what the group doesn't realize is how very real the danger is.

This read was far creepier than Danielle's first book. But you don't realize how creepy until maybe the last third of the novel. The pages start flying by because you want to see if Casey and her friends will make it out alive. Answers are truly never clear, but that's almost a positive thing here, because it adds to the insanely creepy mystery. Though I do still wonder about the "mystery". An answer never really became clear for part of it. But it almost seems nonsensical in the light of day.

It's funny too, not that long ago I was watching this old 90s horror movie on TV, I even saw it as a kid--terrified me then, not so much now! Yay! Anyway, I felt reminded of that movie, though the setting was different. I won't mention the movie for obvious spoiler reasons, but it's odd that I thought of said movie when I had watched it months ago. I swear there was another read somewhere in between all these books that also reminded me of the same movie!! I think I even met that author this year and asked her about it, but if I recall, that movie played no part in her inspiration. It was truly just a coincidence! Luckily, I'll meet Danielle soon and I can ask her about this then!

Survive the Night is not for the faint of heart. It's quite terrifying because a lot of the story happens in total darkness underground! Everything is always far creepier when you can't see what's coming at you! Its ending will leave you chilled! So be sure to leave a light on! *winks*

Scary Survival
By Making Good Stories
Think of all the B-movie horror films you've seen that are about teenagers at a party when things suddenly go wrong. Add in a deserted subway tunnel and a monster and you've got Danielle Vega's Survive the Night.

Casey Myrtle is a former high school soccer star who had everything going for her, including an incredibly attractive musician boyfriend, Sam. But when a knee injury sidelines her, Casey starts hanging out with a different sort of crowd, which Shana, with her brightly colored hair, prominently reigns. Shana had planted the idea of taking painkillers for fun rather than just to manage knee pain and helped push Casey into a path of self-medicated self-destruction. Still freshly single and after coming back from rehab, Casey is going to a sleepover with her soccer friends, or at least she was until Shana shows up with a plan to head to New York City for the night to see Sam's band play. While at the music venue, the girls learn about an all-night rave called Survive the Night and set out to find it. Once they do find it, they all have a bit of fun until their friends start disappearing...and then turning up maimed and dead. What horrors lurk in the tunnels and will they get out alive?

The writing was quite good and quickly paced as the suspense built. The narrative progressed naturally with both real-time and flashbacks to flesh out the story arc of Casey's character and what happened to take her from star athlete to pill addict. There were cliches abound in the story, which made me immediately think of all the cheesy horror movies I've ever seen, and this story sticks to the cliched arsenal by having the female virgin survive the terrors of the night. And while a good sewer alligator story has its place, the creature in this story didn't really seem to come from a reasonable place or fit within the established constructs of the story--needless to say, once we were introduced to the creature, my suspension of disbelief went out the window faster than these teens could run from the tentacles with claws.

Country Piano Book
By Kindle Customer
Alfred's Basic Country Piano Book Level 1 has some really fun selections that offer a challenge beyond the other level one books. While I could sight read many of the numbers in the sacred and popular collections, I have had to really work on most of these because they include conventions of country music not commonly used in other genres: the addition of grace notes, certain styles of bass playing reminiscent of guitar picking, the use of parallel thirds and sixths rather than simple chords and thirds, harmony above the melody in some cases. I am quite certain, however, that once I learn the songs, I will enjoy playing them. The first four songs are pretty simple songs written in C. The rest of them have either a syncopated melody or a challenging bass pattern or some accidentals to be aware of. Many of these conventions did not appear in the regular lesson book. Songs in order of appearance are "Beautiful Brown Eyes," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again," "Old Joe Clark," "Worried Man Blues," "Your Cheatin' Heart,"
"Cold,Cold Heart," "Swingin'," "King of the Road," "Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "Make the World Go Away," and "Green, Green Grass of Home." I would recommend this book to any beginner who would like a challenge.

Review from My Overstuffed Bookshelf
By A. Jacobs
Besiege is the second novelette in the Disarm series by June Gray.

In Besiege, we pick up where we left off in the last book. Henry has just been deployed to Afghanistan and Elsie is left with being alone for six months. After finally admitting their feelings for each other in the last book, this proves to be a real test to their relationship.

Elsie learns through another military wife, small things to help in the pain of being left behind at home. She forms a friendship with this other woman and they both are there for each other. Dave, a friend of Henry's and Elsie's brother, checks on her while Henry is away. This leads to a small glitch in Henry and Elsie's relationship with Dave making a move on Elsie. Add on the stress of learning that Henry's base was attacked and Elsie starts to fall apart.

When Henry returns though, he isn't the same man who left. He is dealing with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and has closed himself off from Elsie. Together they have to try and figure out a way to help him which leads to him going to California for therapy and to spend time with his family. Again, Elsie has to watch Henry walk away and deciding what she can do to help.

While this book wasn't as sexy and hot as the first part in the series, this one does deal with serious issues. While I think that Henry didn't really need to travel to a therapist, it does create a good set-up for the next part and leaving the reader with another sad cliffhanger. Even though it wasn't as good as the first book in this series, I do plan on reading the next book.

Realistic take on the strains of deployment
By MsRomanticReads
The second story had me tearing up, a lot. I'd made me remember my own time being left behind while my husband deployed for a year tour. Like Elsie, I also learned quickly about doing things on my own and becoming more independent. When Henry finally makes it back, he seems different - more intense, easily angered, and more possessive. A misunderstanding leads him down a destructive path with both his career and his relationship with Elsie. The only way he can save both is to visit his old psychiatrist. So once again he's heading out for the next 18 days. Elsie knows it's for the best, but it doesn't make it any easier when it comes to missing the old Henry.

The strain on their relationship felt very realistic, as did Elise's belief that time, love and patience would slowly bring Henry out of his changed state of mind. Their intense passion for one another was still there, but it had taken on a desperate edge. While this was a more emotional read then the first book, the roller coaster of emotions and trials was realistically captured and well written.

Meeting Henry Again
By Adriana A.
Henry Logan resisted a long damn time to be with Elsie Sherman, but after she played the vixen a week before his deployment he couldn't do it anymore. Elsie couldn't believe when Henry told her he loved her. She had had feelings for him for so long that being together seemed too good to be true. Then he left. Six long months of torture passed and a different man came back from Afghanistan. Trying to reconcile the man she fell for, with the man that return from war becomes a tricky endeavor in the second installment of Disarm.

Review

Well organized and derived, Book of Value provides strong coverage of the philosophical grounding for value investing, a subject area that does not lend itself to academic presentation.

(David Nawrocki, Katherine M. Salisbury and Richard J. Salisbury, Jr. Endowed Professor of Finance, Villanova School of Business)

Book of Value is long overdue. Let's hope it is the beginning of a backlash against the day-trading, quarterly profit obsession style investing that now dominates global markets. Anurag Sharma provides insight into an investment process that is so old-fashioned that it appears revolutionary. This is a true investment philosophy that has the added benefit of letting the investor sleep better at night.

A Framework for Investing
By Simon Condon
I have read most well regarded investment books of all time and I have worked in financial markets for over 15 years. I don't know the author. In my humble opinion this is a special book that every investor, whether novice or professional can benefit from. I have read it twice now and made notes, and now written my first Amazon book review. I have not been prompted to do any of those actions before despite reading and gaining valuable knowledge from great books by Greenwald, Marks, Graham, Fisher and many other great investing authors. The author defines investing as a 'problem of choice as opposed to defining it as a problem of chance'. The book provides an analytical framework for controlling emotions and biases using the principle of negation, turning investing into a negative art. I found many insights in this book that will help with my investing. Real world company examples are provided and enough information is provided for practical application. I would have liked to have seen more real world application examples with different outcomes and associated discussion however I presume the author had page constraints. At 330 pages there is already a lot of valuable information packed in the book. The author mentions plans for a second edition. I for one will look forward to its publication.

No cognitive failures here
By Richard M. Rockwood
I have now been in the investing business for more than 15 years and rarely does an investing book surprise me in a good way but Book of Value by Anurag Sharma managed to do just that. I have become quite skeptical of academics that teach investing because they don’t seem to grasp the realities of the investment process. This book avoids those cognitive failures and puts its readers on the right track in vital areas such as investor psychology, diversification, and how to determine a proper discount rate. All areas that cause the vast majority of investment failures that I encounter. I would recommend this books for new investors, those who aren’t successfully investing currently, institutional investors, and investing consultants.

By Robert Dainard
I own well over 200 books on the subject of investing/history of markets; from well-known modern classics like The Most Important Thing to forgotten gems like The Money Game. It’s been a good while since I’ve picked up such a refreshing, well-written and important book that truly adds value to the existing breadth of literature on the subject. So many redundant books on investing out there; this is certainly not one of those!

This book does not introduce entirely new concepts but does offer key building blocks that so many behavioral finance and traditional finance books seem to miss. The vast majority of investors would likely serve themselves well if they focused on the investment principals laid in just handful of books and simply reread them. I've not recommended the same group of books to different investors but one I almost always recommended is "Your money and Your Brain, by Jason Zwieg. The Book of Value is now on a list of two I plan to recommend to just about every investor.

"Ferociously moving … despite Bennett’s thrumming plot, despite the snap of her pacing, it’s the always deepening complexity of her characters that provides the book’s urgency." –The New York Times Book Review

"Fantastic… a book that feels alive on the page."–The Washington Post

A dazzling debut novel from an exciting new voice, The Mothers is a surprising story about young love, a big secret in a small community—and the things that ultimately haunt us most.

Set within a contemporary black community in Southern California, Brit Bennett's mesmerizing first novel is an emotionally perceptive story about community, love, and ambition. It begins with a secret.

"All good secrets have a taste before you tell them, and if we'd taken a moment to swish this one around our mouths, we might have noticed the sourness of an unripe secret, plucked too soon, stolen and passed around before its season."

It is the last season of high school life for Nadia Turner, a rebellious, grief-stricken, seventeen-year-old beauty. Mourning her own mother's recent suicide, she takes up with the local pastor's son. Luke Sheppard is twenty-one, a former football star whose injury has reduced him to waiting tables at a diner. They are young; it's not serious. But the pregnancy that results from this teen romance—and the subsequent cover-up—will have an impact that goes far beyond their youth. As Nadia hides her secret from everyone, including Aubrey, her God-fearing best friend, the years move quickly. Soon, Nadia, Luke, and Aubrey are full-fledged adults and still living in debt to the choices they made that one seaside summer, caught in a love triangle they must carefully maneuver, and dogged by the constant, nagging question: What if they had chosen differently? The possibilities of the road not taken are a relentless haunt.

In entrancing, lyrical prose, The Mothers asks whether a "what if" can be more powerful than an experience itself. If, as time passes, we must always live in servitude to the decisions of our younger selves, to the communities that have parented us, and to the decisions we make that shape our lives forever.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of October 2016: The Mothers is an absorbing and powerful novel about motherhood, female friendship and finding love with a broken heart. Brit Bennett will captivate you with her characters – who are hurting, flawed and trying to navigate the unsteady transition into adulthood. Seventeen year old Nadia Turner has her world turned upside down when her mother commits suicide and shortly thereafter, she discovers she’s pregnant with the pastor’s son’s child. Nadia finds a safe harbor in her best friend Aubrey, but as the years go by, her past decisions invade the present, ushering in a new wave of wounds. The Mothers ambitiously tackles heavy circumstances, but the hope of these young black women and Bennett’s ability to convey the ferocity of what it means have a mother, to be a mother, and to want a mother, make this novel a resoundingly magnetic and essential read. --Al Woodworth, The Amazon Book Review

Review
"Ferociously moving. . .a lush book, a book of so many secrets, betrayal. . .Despite Bennett’s thrumming plot, despite the snap of her pacing, it’s the always deepening complexity of her characters that provides the book’s urgency. . . I found myself reading not to find out what happens to the characters, but to find out who they are." –The New York Times Book Review

“Ms. Bennett allows her characters to follow their worst impulses, and she handles provocative issues with intelligence, empathy and dark humor. Her risk-taking pays off.”–The New York Times

"[A] compelling debut." –The New Yorker

"Delivers lines that you'll want to savor and read out loud — because it's a story about secrets and betrayals, and part of the pleasure is your own sighs and gasps. It's both intimate and epic in scope. . .It hums along at a brisk, emotional pace — the kind of story that feels like it's moving fast, but really, it's moving deep." –NPR

[Bennett’s] storytelling does what all truly good fiction does:it draws you in and, on a universal level, connects with you and makes you think. . .The Mothersis a thought-provoking novel that will resonate long after it is read.” –USA Today

"A fantastic debut novel. . .Some novels take place as you read them, while others grow more complicated as you think back on them. Bennett has written that rare combination: a book that feels alive on the page and rich for later consideration. . .Bennett is a writer to watch." –The Washington Post

"One of the most exciting debuts of the fall."–LA Times

"Luminous. . .engrossing and poignant, this is one not to miss."–People

"[A] striking debut. . .America needs more books like The Mothers, which quietly, but critically, deepens our appreciation of the black experience, and expands our collective understanding of what it means now to be growing up and grasping for direction and affection." –O Magazine

"With echoes of James Baldwin’sGo Tell It on the Mountain,The Mothersis not your typical coming-of-age novel: It begins with Nadia’s abortion, an experience often absent from our culture’s stories, and goes on to look at how women step in to nurture – and sometimes betray – one another."–Vogue

"Brit Bennett comes charging out of Oceanside, California, with her stunning debut,The Mothers, a refreshingly fast-paced story of young love, race, and religious hypocrisy."–Vanity Fair

"Bennett’s hypnotic writing hooks you from the very beginning and never lets you go in this spine-tingling study of destiny."–Essence

"The Mothers isn’t about the consequences of decisions, but the repercussions of keeping secrets. . .funny, generous, and brightly written." –GQ

"The Mothers is a beautifully written, sad and lingering book – an impressive debut for such a young writer."–The Guardian

"A magical and startlingly realistic account of how powerfully our pasts can haunt us into adulthood—no matter how far we try to run from home."–Harper’s Bazaar

"Gripping. . .the twenty-first century answer to Toni Morrison’s Sula. . .displays the same complexity in its portrayal of a pair of girlfriends as they grow together, and then apart, in a tight-knit African American community."–Elle

"As much asTHE MOTHERS is steeped in black culture, it’s also pointedly, poignantly universal in its depiction of young love and friendship and hard choices. Maybe that qualifies as revolutionary, or maybe it’s just a really good novel, one that makes all the mess and magic of being young feel both new and familiar in the best kind of way."–Entertainment Weekly

"Stunning… this heartbreaking coming of age tale takes a brutally honest look at how the decisions of our past can haunt us well into adulthood, no matter how far we try to distance ourselves." – Real Simple

"As her flawed, lovable characters make decisions they regret and deal with the consequences, Bennett unravels their tangled lives with a devastating elegance."–The Houston Chronicle

“[An] extraordinary novel, which mines human relationships so deeply and with such empathy… powerful.”–The Boston Globe

"A bracing, heartfelt debut about family, motherhood and friendship, grief and healing and how all of these elements and our own shaky decisions constantly reshape our lives."–The Miami Herald

"Shows remarkable confidence, flair and wisdom." –Seattle Times

“Don’t keep this beautifully written coming-of-age story to yourself.” —Newsday

“Bennett’s evocation of the way her characters are haunted by their families’ pasts, her depiction of unbridled, damaging passion, and her masterful orchestration of different voices are techniques reminiscent of the great Toni Morrison.” –Dallas Morning News

"What [Bennett] has done is fulfill the both simple and impossibly difficult mandate of any storyteller: to create a world her readers believe in and care about and draw meaning from…Extraordinary…You should be reading it."–Brooklyn Magazine

"The book tells its biggest secret right away. But what happens after is more interesting.Think: the small-town drama of "FridayNight Lights" and the 'what ifs' of "Sliding Doors."–The Skimm

"Amid roiling arguments about privilege, appropriation, and race, the 26-year-old writer — author of essays on all of the above — has written a first novel exactly for its time."–Vulture

"A smart, insightful story about the unique ways in which women need one another, the ways only women are capable of hurting each other, and how a decision you make when you're young can ripple like a bullet through the rest of your life — whether you regret it, or not." –Refinery29

"The sad beauty of. . .The Mothers[is that] the characters’ pasts and deeper desires may be obfuscated by time. . . The Mothersbrims with psychological insight and thoughtful commentary on the pain of loss and what motivates us to take actions maligned with our beliefs."–Huffington Post

"Brit Bennett is so bracingly talented on the page. . .[The Mothers is] astute and absorbing and urgent."–Jezebel

“A masterwork of modern fiction.” –Fusion

“Gorgeous.” –PopSugar

"Bennett's masterful first novel takes the reader on a multidimensional exploration of the things we desire and the things we settle for, what cements loyalties and what justifies betrayal."–Blavity

"Brilliant. . .poignant, yet lovely. . .The Mothers is one of those novels you truly don’t want to put down."–LitHub

“Bennett illuminates [her characters’] psychologies with the same delicate sense of economy, probing for the ways that their experiences produce complex emotional states only a fraction of which are known to one another — or even to themselves.” – The Millions

"Extraordinary. . .Bennett broke my heart with this novel, with her investigation of friendship, secrets, love, choice and forgiveness."–Electric Literature

"The Mothers is a quiet, beautiful text. . .As a reader, it is easy to trust where Bennett is taking you. Surrender is necessary, but with someone who can craft stories as skillfully as she can, it isn’t painful."–The Rumpus

"Brit Bennett is the real thing. The Mothersis a stellar novel — moving, thoughtful. Stunning. Icouldn’t put it down. I’mso excited to have this brilliant new voice in the world." –Jacqueline Woodson,National Book Award-winning author ofBrown Girl DreamingandAnother Brooklyn

"Brit Bennett’s debut novel The Mothers has stayed with me since I first read it, the words and the intimacy of the prose seeping into my pores… There is a real tenderness to how Bennett tells this story and to how she writes these characters who are so richly fleshed out, so unbearably human." –Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist and An Untamed State

"What haunted me the most about this novel was the way it made a presence out of absence. It gave nothingness teeth and weaponized shadows. I thought I was escaping the current political climate, but I wasn’t. Part of what makes The Mothers a stunning novel is its exploration of kinship and primary bonds. Our relationship to country is as fraught as our relationship to kin."–Carrie Brownstein, author of Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl

"Brit Bennett's masterful debut is brimming with unforgettable scenes and the sort of keenly-observed, precise language that makes you look at your own relationships anew. Told with the wisdom of a seasoned, compassionate storyteller,The Mothersis anovel about community, friendship, grief and growth. The two women at the center of this novel are characters you will find yourself thinking about long after you've turned the last page-- they pull you in close and never let you go. Bennett is a brilliant and much-needed new voice in literature." –Angela Flournoy, author of National Book Award-finalistThe Turner House

"Brit Bennett’sThe Mothersis a brilliant exploration of friendship, desire, inheritance, the love we seek, and the love we settle for. It is the kind of book that from its first page seduces you into knowing that the heartbreak coming will be worth it." –Danielle Evans, author ofBefore You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self

"Brit Bennett’sThe Mothersis an engaging and assured debut novel of depth, and introspective power. It succeeds as a brilliant study of a modern black woman, and as a lyrical and majestic portrait of her place in society." –Chigozie Obioma, author ofThe Fishermen

"Wonderful – warm and tender and necessary." –Yaa Gyasi, author ofHomegoing

"Conveys the complexities and challenges of young love with refreshing honesty and beautiful sentences. I cared about BritBennett's characters, and the choices they made, and couldn’t stop reading this remarkable debut."–Vendela Vida, author ofThe Diver’s ClothesLie Empty

"How do I start to describe The Mothers? Visceral? Riveting? Heart-wrenching? In the end this novel is all three and then some… Each line that Bennett produces cracks open with more intensity in order to ask over and over again: What if? The past and the present converge with each blossoming subplot until you begin to wonder what "mistakes" you've made in the past that changed your future, and whether or not you will have to grapple with them. The Mothers is a rollercoaster ride that picks up very quickly even while maintaining its complexity as it moves through the interwoven journeys of Brit Bennett's unforgettable characters." –Morgan Jerkins, Book of the Month

So many things to love in this book about love, loss, family, friendship and life. I finished last night yet cannot stop thinking about this story and it's characters. I'm still wondering about them and what will happen to them all as they move forward with their lives where the book leaves off.

SYNOPSIS
This story is m mostly told from the point of view Nadia, a highly intelligent, determined yet conflicted, complicated young lady and also told from the point of view of a group of "Church Mothers" from a very tight knit church called Upper Room. There are chapters featuring other points if view but it's mostly Nadia and the Mothers.

When Nadia Turner is 17 years old she loses her mother. She and her mother were very close so she is completely devastated. Her father, Robert, is so caught up in his own grief that he seems to forget that he's solely response for a 17 year old girl who may be handling her loss in self-destructive ways.

To deal his wife's untimely death, Robert turns to the church where the Turner family has always worshipped and his late wife was a very active member. Robert finds a sense of purpose spending his time helping wherever he is needed.

Upper Room is more than just a place to spend an hour on Sunday mornings, to its members, it their community. Many members are there daily, considering the church to be their family. The pastor and his family are all but treated like royalty. In fact, the pastor's wife is referred to as 'the first lady.'

The "Church Mothers" are the older ladies who have been involved with the church for as long as anyone can remember. They basically devote their lives to taking care of church business; running bake sale etc, praying daily for the members in need and gossiping about members - of course they don't consider it gossip, they think of it as sharing concerns and looking for opportunities to pray for others. Nonetheless, it's gossip.

The book opens following Nadia though the rough months right after her mother dies when she forms bonds that will stay with her for the rest of her life and makes a mistake that will also follow her through her life.

A lot of very 'real life' drama ensures making it hard to put the book down and hard not to take sides and pick favorites.

WHAT I LOVED:
I really loved the characters. They were very human and flawed. None were bad but they all made their share of mistakes.

The "Church Mothers" were so real to me and probably anyone who grew up entrenched in a church community. They are basically well meaning ladies who set the standards for what is considered acceptable church behavior, church attire and church etiquette. Every Sunday morning across the US, mothers are straightening hair bows, combining down cow licks and reminding children to mind their P;s and Q's, all n an effort to get a nod of approval from these ladies.

The story line was relevant, interesting and sucked me right in. It was hard to put it down.

I both loved and hated that the ending didn't tie things up in an easy to swallow little package.

WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE
There wasn't a lot to not love. I really don't enjoy books where the story line seems out line with reality and where characters do things that seem unbelievable. This book felt very authentic. I guess if I had to complain, it was a little short.

Beautifully written story of haunting decisions
By sonnetgirl7
"The Mothers" is unlike anything I could have expected. A young teenage girl whose mother committed suicide becomes pregnant. Her decision - enabled by the decision of the father's parents - effect everyone involved for years to come. Looking back across this story are the Mothers, the elderly women of an African American church called The Upper Room. With wisdom and insight, they empathize, shake their heads, sigh, and show compassion to the young couple, and the others who come into contact with their hidden heartache and regret. Written with depth of feeling for the characters, who continue to make hurtful mistakes while still caring deeply for others, it's a story of how one decision - seemingly fair and sound - can change the trajectory of several lives.

So good!

Another one of those books where I've marked so many little things I love so much & keeping them to myself bc I'm not ready to share them yet. I loved reading this and that sounds simple but hear me out...I love reading every word. I didn't skim or gloss over anything. I love that it's not even 300 pages long and I love that it's quiet. This goes on the (pretty) short list of books that are hyped and marketed a lot/everywhere and legit worthy of all the praise, IMO. (Bc WOW ppl love to say EVERY BOOK EVER IS GOOD/DAZZLING but I mean obvi only some of them are. This one is.)
