Finally, a book on differential geometry for someone who doesn't already know it.

I have been looking for a really long time for a decent introduction to differential geometry. I rate this one 5 stars just because out of all the books I have gotten from my school library (probably about 10 by now), this one is the only one I have seen that doesn't assume that you already are good with all the shorthand notation that is often used in texts on differential geometry. It has been really frustrating to find a simple explanation of the symbols used in most of these books, and none of them, though they claimed to be introductions to the topic, ever really explained themselves adequately. Basically, this book has been the only one so far that has been able to bridge the gap for me between the sort of undergraduate mathematics I am used to and differential geometry. I had previously felt like there was this nearly impenetrable barrier - created by some sort of inner circle that I had to belong to, either by taking a class or having it explained to me by someone who was already familiar with it - that I was just going to have to but my head up against until I broke it down.

But fortunately this book came along, which has made the whole thing very simple for me, and is at just the right level so that when I finish it off, I can go off into those other textbooks that seemed to have been written in a different language and be able to understand what they are saying!

I give this book a 5 star rating for the above reasons, coupled with the fact that this book actually has all the answers (nearly) for the problems in the back - why on earth don't most books just put the darned answers in the back? Otherwise, how do you know if you are doing the problems correctly, I think its rather ridiculous - I surely learn the most when I see that I have done a problem the wrong way, and I go hunting for errors, and usually either find something trivial, or have to rework my entire conception of the idea - which would be impossible without the answers! Either way, this is a good book that really takes you from the basics and gets you into the door on this interesting subject!

Needlessly complicating

The shipping of the book was timely and the cost was fine - the actually textbook is horrible. I spend more time trying to figure out what figure, definition or example the author is referring to than I do actually trying to understand the material. My professor has to give out page numbers for the homework because instead of assigning #1-6 of section 2.1 as you'd say in other textbooks, you have to say do #1-6 of chapter 2 section 2.2.1. I'm sure it sounds petty, but I really would like something straightforward in the formatting when I'm trying to approach a subject I've never seen before.

Roots of Latent Semantic Analysis

"Latent semantic analysis (LSA) is a theory and method for extracting and representing the meaning of words. Meaning is estimated using statistical computations applied to a large corpus of text." This book's editors launched wide interest in LSA and its applications in psychology and education. They have assembled twenty-three chapters from others who have used and improved this technique. These chapters are intended to dispel misconceptions about LSA and make it available to a wider audience.

The chapters are grouped into six sections. In the first two, readers learn about the theoretical and mathematical underpinnings of LSA and how it has been used to model psychological processes. The next two sections describe applications of LSA in education and information retrieval. Chapters in the fifth section look ahead, exploring how LSA techniques can be extended to use word order and other sources of information. In a final single-chapter section, the editors describe their vision for future development of LSA.

Three particularly useful chapters are:

Thomas Landauer's "LSA as a Theory of Meaning" is a readably-brief overview of how LSA extracts meaning from text, what limitations it has, and how its models should be interpreted. Those with no prior LSA exposure need to read it.

Simon Dennis's "How to Use the LSA Web Site" enables readers to explore applications of LSA without building their own semantic spaces. The referenced web site contains demonstrations that allow users to explore the similarity of different samples of text using LSA algorithms.

The greatest living poet writing in English

The greatest living poet writing in English. Of that, there is no doubt. His only real rival, Geoffrey Hill, to often lapses into mannered obscurantism. Murray's abilities with language are, at times, of a sublimity, emotional complexity, and technical accomplishment that put him in the first rank of poets of the last 125 years--in league with Yeats, Eliot, Frost, and more recently, Larkin. Larkin especially comes to mind. Murray has his same savage wit, his daring to mix the quotidian and mundane with the speculative and metaphyiscal, and his cynicism, but not, ultimately, his despair. There are "old fools" in Murray's work, but their lives have meaning and somewhere in them, a dignity. His unfashionable sacramental view of the universe, a universe that is filled with things that are not of themselves, but are charged with supernatural significance, looks decidely out-of-date. We live in a post-post modern age now, as the shape shifting deconstructions of Derrida and Foucault fade and as a kind of brutal, deterministic biologism more and more seems pervasive. Murray is a throwback, yes, but also an alternative: of how to write poetry, and maybe even of how to live.

As an article in the May 2016 issue of The Atlantic said, Les Murray may be the best poet in the world. That is, of course, debatable. But he is clearly one of the greats of the last 50 years and anyone who loves poetry needs to be familiar with him. He is a magician with words and images, and no one captures the essence, the physical sense, the culture of Australia better. This collection is the one to get; published in revised form in 2014, it's a greatest hits of his career.

Although it makes you want to know more of the Australia and the Australians -- that breed of the non-understood folks, you don't read him for him being an Australian -- far from it -- but from what he is taken from his life, his landscape and for the alchemy of turning his world into his poetry.

Fantastic book about the "real" Italy!

For many years we have been in love with Italy. The food, the wine, the landscape, the beautiful stonehouses and the wonderful friendly Italian people. Like most people we have travelled to Tuscany, Rome, Venice, Lago di Como and Lago di Garda. Why? Beacuse talking to travel agencies and friends these were the only places that they knew. We have had some great trips, but we have never really found the "real" Italy, where there are few turists and the local people only speak Italian. However, after reading this exciting book written by 2 Danes, I think we have found the region we have been looking for: Piedmont in Northern-Italy where Torino is the capital. Fantastic food (truffles in the autumn), the best wines in Italy (Barolo and Barberesco), close to the sea in the summer and close to some of the best skiing in the winter. Sounds just like the perfect location for us. The book tells the story about a family that did what many of us dream about, but very few dare to do: They bought a ruin in the hills of Roccaverano and converted it into a wounderful vacation house. It is done in details, but also with a great sense of humor. In fact the entire book is written in a very personal way with lots of great tips and stories about the wine, the food and the people of this region. The pictures are amazing and you really fall in love with the area. We have already booked a 3 week trip to Piedmont in the beginning of June this year. Thank you Erik and Jesper for opening up our eyes to this region!

I have not had time to read this book. But I would like to correspond with the authors. Because I think the house was in my family in the 1700's and would like to talk to the owner. I have not done anything about this question but will in future. Sincerely Suzette Coleman. It was wonderful to get the book and in good shape too.

In recent books, such as Lisa Michaels' Split [Je 1 98], authors in their 20s have described their "counterculture childhoods." This collection looks several decades farther back, gathering memoirs of "red diaper babies" whose parents were members or former members of the U.S. Communist Party or nonmembers involved in party-related activities. Some of the authors are relatively well known, like journalist Carl Bernstein and '60s activist Bettina Aptheker; however, most are noncelebrity children of rank-and-file party workers. They address several subjects, including patterns of life within their families, the impact of political persecution, and the ways they've dealt with their political heritage. The contributors "look back on their childhoods [the editors note] with varying mixtures of nostalgia, pride, confusion, anger, and pain" --as would almost any other grouping of nearly 50 memoirists. Yet the collection reflects some commonalities of experience; particularly, strong political and historical awareness, "an oppositional identity," and conviction that, together, individuals can accomplish change. Not the full story ... educate yourself on The Venona Project revelations

While I haven't finished this book, my impression thus far is: many of the men, especially those who emigrated from Eastern Europe were men who ruled their families or wives with a degree of dominance that certainly didn't impress me. It was hard for me to swallow the stories that many of the members of the CPUSA, generally well read, in some cases, well educated, hadn't had more doubts about the information emerging from sources that detailed the excesses of Stalin. A "party line" for sure was adhered to rigidly, it seems, and there is not really anyway to say: we hadn't heard of the deeply troubling excesses of Stalin prior to the Krushchev revelations. The publication date was 1998. By then, the Venona Transcripts of deciphered GRU and NKVD/KGB messages that revealed a large number of members of the CPUSA had actually, wittingly or unwittingly, contributed information to Soviet spies embedded in American government agencies as well as every day life in the United States. Venona information showed that many CPUSA members were aware they were passing information to men and women who convinced them they were helping the Soviet Union's cause. McCarthy, perhaps given some tidbits of information from Hoover, completely misrepresented the extent to which CPUSA was heavily infiltrated by communists who were spies. And the terror campaign directed against members of the CPUSA was reprehensible. But the often blind obedience to the Party Line somehow lessened my belief that many of these figures within the CPUSA were without some contribution to the better position Stalin's regime had in it's pursuit of global power against the United States. The summer camps and singing and attempts to further workers rights ... interesting. But, when stacked up against what we know now, and what had to be whispered about among members of the CPUSA, says: why all the fear of speaking ill of Stalin and his regime? What did that say to the average member about the nature of communism? Venona made clearer that at least one of the Rosenbergs was clearly a traitor. Ethel's guilt was circumstantial and her death inappropriate. Without doubt, Venona clarifies that Alger Hiss and several others uncovered by counter espionage efforts of the FBI, CIA, British MI-6, were among the most accomplished liars in American history. The network of who knew who, when compared to the Venona revelations, might change some of the nature of why some parents were unwilling to discuss what they knew, and when, before many dropped their membership in CPUSA. It seems to me that yes, these children often were heavily involved in the civil rights movement; anti-war movement in the Vietnam War; in union leadership or unionization in pre-WW II, there seems to be a fair degree of personal problems associated with growing up in the families of CPUSA. Mixed feelings. My discomfort came more from how some of the women were treated by domineering men; and how children were ignored or sucked into a world of intrigue that again, was part and parcel of family members being communist. I would like to see some of these memoirs updated after the writers had studied the Venona Transcripts. Therein, many names were named who were complicit in at least knowledge of those who have been uncovered as involved in espionage. Within each family, the names and associations of people in the Party would undoubtedly show that not everyone within the Party was "just" a communist in America.

This book contributes to our understanding of the strengths & weaknesses of the Left in this country. We are crippled by a paucity of historical treatments of the U.S. left in general & of the history of the C.P.U.S.A in particular.
