Albert Dedicates His Life to Healing Others

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Spencer Johnson helps us appreciate the dedication of Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965).

The book introduces us to a young man named Albert, who looked at his life and decided that he had been given many advantages others did not have. He decided he would do his best to share his gifts with others. Albert studied hard in medical school and became a doctor. Then he moved to Africa and spent his life making sure the people there had better medical care.

Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Schweitzer's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults.

Closing quote: "Not everyone can become a doctor and go to Africa like Albert Schweitzer, but there will always be work dedicated people can do. That is one thing Albert taught the world. It's something you might want to think about." (p. 62)

I bought many of the books in this series at a book sale. My grandaughter just loved them and has reread them many times. I think they are marvelous and a wonderful way to offer biography, history and values in an interesting format!

Love this series of books. I have been reading them to my children and now grandchildren since 1978. I look forward to completing my collection. by the way, why is the one on Jacques Cousteau so darned pricey?

About the Author

David Nahmani (Valley Village, CA) co-produced a song on the last Pop Will Eat Itself album, and worked with hit producer Toby Gad (Alicia Keys, Beyonc�, Robin Thicke, Fergie). He co-wrote and co-produced songs for the MTV series The Real World and Undressed. He engineered and produced three classical albums on Decca Records/BMG for the Bernard Calmel Orchestra in Paris, France; released tracks and remixes on Cleopatra Records; and, using Logic Pro, has programmed XF MIDI songs for Yamaha. David is the director of the Los Angeles Logic Pro User Group and publisher of LogicProHelp.com. As an Apple-certified trainer, he conducts Logic workshops out of his Los Angeles training center. His teaching experience also includes Logic training for the Grammy Foundation, and at Apple public events, such as the Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach, Remix Hotel, Taxi Road Rally, and ASCAP Music Expo.

NOTHING beats Apple Pro training

I've been on logic since version 3 (yikes!). I use all kinds of training, including MacProVideo as reference for particular items. But nothing comes close to the methodical comprehensive approach of peachpit's pro training books. And I always make it a point to go through their entire training whenever there's a major version of logic (or FCP) released. There are a lot of training programs/videos/books out there that you can learn a lot of tricks from. But nothing comes close when it comes to comprehensive training.

Even as an old time avid user of Logic, I went through this entire book from the beginning and once again learned so much about workflow and various options to allow me to work faster and more intuitively. Highly recommended for beginners and professionals alike.

Didn't think twice when I bought this one, as I had good experience from the David's preceding book about Logic Pro 9. I had some worries, though, that much of the information would be redundant. My worries were needless; the new book primarily focuses on all the new functionality provided with Pro X. This being said, it's still a book that covers/brings all the basic knowledge you need to have to work with Logic. These training books are certified by Apple, so they hold a high quality. I specifically like the consistent step-by-step approach. Everything is explained in detail and illustrated by both pictures and easy-to-follow guidelines. The book comes with comprehensive audio and project material, which is great when you need to be hands-on. I bought the ebook/ iPad Kindle version, so had to download the files from the publisher's web site. It went easy and smooth. All in all, I can only recommend this book. It covers all main aspects of music creation with Logic Pro X, without being cluttered or diving too much into depth. It keeps a good balance between essential information and information for general understanding. Lastly, I need to say that this is not for everyone. If you don't wish to read 500 pages while doing your hands-on exercises, I would recommend to use video-based tutorial services like those provided by macProVideo.com instead. They're really great too!

Great Book

I've only gone through the first few chapters but learned so much. I am a beginner with Logic so this was exactly what I needed. I guess this is why it is the Apple Certified Method.

The method is lab based so it's like being in a classroom only without the instructor.

About the Author

Dr. Borzu Sabahi (SJD, LLM, Georgetown University Law Center; MA, LL.B. University of Tehran) is counsel to the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P in Washington, D.C. He specializes in international arbitration and has been involved in a number of arbitration cases under the ICC, ICDR, ICSID, LCIA, and UNCITRAL rules. Mr. Sabahi is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center where he co-teaches a seminar on investor State dispute resolution. He regularly speaks on conferences and has widely published on various aspects of international investment law, including a comprehensive casebook entitled Investor State Arbitration (co-author, Oxford 2008). He is co-course advisor of a course on investor state arbitration at the International Law Institute.
