Future mobile access networks will require upgraded telecommunications networks; 3G LTE/ SAE is the next step, allowing data rates above 100 Mbps. Telecommunications engineers will need to understand the new SAE/ EPC architecture and its tendency towards automatic configuration, but the complexity, length and dryness of the standards documents make it difficult for them to find the information they need and work out how to apply it to their daily product and network development.
This book – a new edition of SAE and the Evolved Packet Core – provides clear, concise and comprehensive coverage of the entire SAE/ EPC architecture, explaining concepts and standards and how they are used in commercial service settings. More than just a pr�cis of the standards, it gives real insight into their development and the real-world scenarios in which they have been used since the publication of the first edition. About the Author
Magnus Olsson is an expert in system architecture and standardization at Ericsson. He has worked with the overall mobile network architecture since joining Ericsson in 1995 and has over 10 years of experience in the standardization of mobile systems. He served as the chairman of 3GPP TSG SA WG2 (Architecture Working Group) for four years and has contributed to numerous specifications within this forum. He has been involved in driving the System Architecture Evolution (SAE) work item since its inception within 3GPP. He holds an MSc in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering from the Link�ping Institute of Technology.
Catherine Mulligan is a Research Fellow at Imperial College, London. Catherine’s research focuses on the emerging technologies of the communications industries and the creation of new business models around the data streams associated with them. She has 15 years industrial experience in the communications industries, including 10 years at Ericsson. She holds several patents and is the author of several books on the economics and technologies of the mobile industry. Catherine holds an MPhil in Engineering and PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a BSc (Hons 1) in Business Information Technology from UNSW, Australia.

If you need more than an introduction to the EPC this is the right book.
It is well organised and complete. Finding a specific information is easy.
This book provides a high level view of this complex matter plus detailed descriptions and call flows of each topic.

Highly Useful

This is a textbook on the details of cellphone networks. It is concerned more with the land-based data communication and control portions of these facilities than with the radio links connecting to the individual telephones. The book is just the proper introduction for those of us who may be familiar with computers and data networking. The authors do an excellent job with the abbreviations. These are different than the alphabet soup encountered in computer applications or telephony of the Alexander Graham Bell sort. Reading this book enables one to understand specifications for cellular networks. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the workings of mobile data networks.
