About the Author

Wendell Odom, CCIE No. 1624 (Emeritus), has been in the networking industry since 1981. He has worked as a network engineer, consultant, systems engineer, instructor, and course developer; he currently works writing and creating certification study tools. This book is his 27th edition of some product for Pearson, and he is the author of all editions of the CCNA R&S and CCENT Cert Guides from Cisco Press. He has written books about topics from networking basics, certification guides throughout the years for CCENT, CCNA R&S, CCNA DC, CCNP ROUTE, CCNP QoS, and CCIE R&S. He helped develop the popular Pearson Network Simulator. He maintains study tools, links to his blogs, and other resources at www.certskills.com.

This book is great. I am a Network Admin who has had many of these Cisco books. I hate them! This one is the first book from Cisco that I actually enjoyed reading.
If you have had Cisco books in the past remember that this is not one of them.

Easy to read, Clear and Concise

The Good:
Content: If you have just finished Cisco's Networking Academy and are preparing for the test, you need this book! As many of you NetAcad students already know, the NetAcad material can be long winded and dry. The Official Cert Guide is SO refreshing after NetAcad. The content of this book is clear and concise. A topic that would take 100 pages to explain in Net Acad is explained in 20-30 pages in the Official Cert Guide. I sometimes wonder how Wendell Odom does it. How does he compress all that content into just 20-30 pages?!

Simlite: The free version of the simulator that comes with this book is great as well. It focuses mostly on part 2 of the book. One thing that I enjoyed about it is that it supports the show interfaces status command (a command that is not supported in Packet Tracer). At the time of this review, the full simulator is not out (I would buy it if it was). When it does come out, I'd definitely recommend buying it if you want structured labs that go along with the book. The other (more expensive) alternative to buying the simulator is buying real lab equipment. If you plan on just taking the CCNA, then I recommend 3 x 1841 routers (about $65 each) and 2 x 2960 switches (about $75 each). If you plan on also studying the CCNP then 3 x 2811 routers (about $85 each), 2 x 3560's (about $90 each) and 2 x 2960's will work.

Pictures, Examples, Config Checklists: This book has a lot of pictures (yay pictures!) to help you visualize what the network is doing and how everything is connected together. The pictures really help to solidify the information. The pictures are usually accompanied by examples of how the devices in the picture are configured. Again, this helps reinforce and solidify the concepts. Finally, the Config Checklists make labbing the material SOOO easy. They explain step-by-step what to do to configure a protocol, security, etc. Don't be intimidated by the size of this book! There are A LOT of pictures, examples, and config checklists that take up A LOT of pages.

The bad:
1. Errors: Okay there are a couple of errors (literally 2) that I've found while reading and fact checking this book along with the NetAcad materials. One is in figure 22-5. I won't mention what it is so that you can try to use what you've learned to discover the problem. The other is in table 6-4. The prompt that you see after entering the vlan global configuration command should be (config-vlan)# rather than hostname(vlan)# prompt as listed in the table. The hostname(vlan)# command was the prompt that was used with the legacy method for configuring methods. Also, the errors are so small in significance that it shouldn't dissuade you from buying the book.

Conclusion:
This book is definitely worth the money. It covers the information needed for the exam and I definitely recommend it for anyone who has just finished NetAcad. There are a couple (literally 2!!) of MINOR errors, but they aren't significant enough to not buy the book.

This is a great book with lots of materials in it. I liked it so much I purchased the kindle version so that I could take it with me. The added cd was a bonus that included some simulations. I haven't taken my exam yet but I highly recommend this book if you plan to.

B. Rama Rao is a principal engineer at the MITRE Corporation. He received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University. W. Kunysz works for Nov Atel, Inc. An inventor of six patents, he holds a Master of Nautical Sciences degree from Gdynia Maritime University in Poland. R. Fante held various engineering positions at Avco Corporation, the U.S. Air Force, Textron Corporation, and most recently at the MITRE Corporation. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton University. K. McDonald is the lead signal processing engineer at the MITRE Corporation. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Lehigh University.

About the Author

Charles W. Therrien was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He received both undergraduate and graduate (MS, Ph.D) degrees in electrical engineering from MIT. He was a member of the technical staff at Lincoln Laboratory from 1971 to 1984 and then moved to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. During his more than 20 years there, he taught courses in systems and signal processing and authored three books, as well as numerous papers, in these areas.

Murali Tummala is a professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Since 1986, he has taught and conducted research there in the areas of computer networks and signal processing systems. He received his Ph.D from India Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1984.

This book...

It might be the material itself, but this book is so dry and hard to understand. The questions it asks are tough, and when you try to find examples in the book, there are none to be found. Also, good luck finding a solutions manual for this thing, because I've tried and failed many times.

Awful to read

This was the required text for my applied probability class and the professor had to regularly provide the class with other writings and excerpts. This book is extremely difficult to read after the first 2-3 chapters. If you're a seasoned math student, you *might* do OK, but my class really struggled with this one. Some of my criticisms:

* The author has a bad habit of skipping "obvious" steps when laying out equations.
* Sometimes a formula interjected out of the blue without any explanation for where it might have come from.
* The chapters are very long without enough progressive problems throughout. Most texts nowadays have 5-15 pages, then problems. This text had 40 pages or so then problems. There's just not enough intermediate steps to confirm your comprehension.
* Severely lacking in diagrams; and some that are provided just aren't that good. For the cost, this was disappointing.

I would've given this book one star if it was just for the 3 chapters our class focused on, but the other 2 we covered weren't so hard to follow.

In statistics, R is the way of the future. The big boys and girls have known this for some time: There are now millions of R users in academia and industry. R is free (as in no cost) and free (as in speech). Andy, Jeremy, and Zoe's book now makes R accessible to the little boys and girls like me and my students. Soon all classes in statistics will be taught in R.

I have been teaching R to psychologists for several years and so I have been waiting for this book for some time. The book is excellent, and it is now the course text for all my statistics classes. I'm pretty sure the book provides all you need to go from statistical novice to working researcher.

Take, for example, the chapter on t-tests. The chapter explains how to compare the means of two groups from scratch. It explains the logic behind the tests, it explains how to do the tests in R with a complete worked example, which papers to read in the unlikely event you do need to go further, and it explains what you need to write in your practical report or paper. But it also goes further, and explains how t-tests and regression are related---and are really the same thing---as part of the general linear model. So this book offers not just the step-by-step guidance needed to complete a particular test, but it also offers the chance to reach the zen state of total statistical understanding.

The main strength of this book is that it presents a lot of information in an accessible, engaging and irreverent way. The style is informal with interesting excursions into the history of statistics and psychology. There is reference to research papers which illustrate the methods explained, and are also very entertaining. About the Author

Andy Field is Professor of Child Psychopathology at the University of Sussex. He has published over 80 research papers, 29 book chapters, and 17 books mostly on child emotional development and statistics.�

He is the founding editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychopathology and has been an associate editor and editorial board member for the British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, Cognition and Emotion, Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review and Research Synthesis Methods.�

His ability to make statistics accessible and fun has been recognized with local and national teaching awards (University of Sussex, 2001, 2015, 2016; the British Psychological Society, 2007), a prestigious UK National Teaching Fellowship (2010), and the British Psychological Society book award (2006). He adores cats (and dogs), and loves to listen to and play very heavy music. He lives in Brighton with his wonderful wife Zo�, his son Zach, his crazy spaniel Ramsey and Fuzzy the cat.

A great introduction to statistics and to R!

Being familiar with the author's SPSS book and wanting to learn R, I leapt at the chance to purchase this book. As I write this, I've been able to go through all the chapters save the last two. The book is a great overview of statistics concepts and provides a gentle, yet comprehensive, introduction to the R language. I'm extremely pleased I bought it.

The author's writing style is conversational and humorous, and some of his examples are outrageous (I didn't know whether to laugh or cry during the logistic regression chapter!). I think this would make the material more accessible to students who are ambivalent about statistics and R. However, though the material is presented in an easy-going manner, it is nevertheless quite comprehensive. The essence of each statistical method is discussed thoroughly, and the procedures for doing these tests in R are clearly detailed in a step by step manner.

What I liked most about the book were the problems at the end of each chapter and the detailed solutions to those problems on the book's accompanying website. I found these excellent for self-study.

To be clear, the book is not the most technical treatise on either statistics or R. The book gives a good overview of the concepts of each statistical method, but computation is kept to a minimum. Similarly, while the book describes how to create functions in R and has several challenging examples, you will only scratch the surface of what R can do. It seems intended primarily for non-mathematics undergraduate students who aspire to doing research in their fields. However, for someone like me who wanted a context in which to become familiar with R, it is invaluable.

The main problem I can see with the book was that there were some missing files for some of the end-of-chapter problems. I, personally, didn't think it was all that bad, as the same data was used in the author's SPSS book and I knew where to look for those SPSS files. Search for "field3e spss files" on your internest search engine of choice. However, that's not apparent to someone who doesn't know about the SPSS book, so I can see how it mars the final product somewhat. I'm still willing to give the book 5 stars, though!

In summary, this is a great book if you want a basic, yet very comprehensive, overview of statistics concepts and want to start your journey into R. Again, I'm very pleased I purchased it!

The Best Introduction to Statistics Available

Andy Field writes some of the most intuitive and entertaining accounts of statistics available, and this book is no exception to that standard. This book is geared towards those who want to start from the beginning and progress through a complete account of the most common methods in statistics based on the general linear model. If you are a beginner, this is one of the best places to start. If you are experienced, this book is a great reference to have around.

The most enjoyable aspect of this book, aside from its humor, is that Field addresses issues of using robust statical methods when assumptions are not met in the data. Instead of glossing over the issues, Field provides the most recent findings in the field and even examples of how to run robust tests in R. However, note if you want to do something very complicated with robust methods, this book is not a cure all, and you would be hard pressed to find one that is.

With regards to R, this book will get you up and running with R even if you have no previous experience with R or programming languages in general. However, a few of the R libraries have changed since this edition's publication, so you will need to search a bit to fix a few errors, but it's not hard and is good practice.

Finally, I must mention that Andy Field has gone out of his way to provide datasets and examples like no other author I have encountered. The book has a companion website full of these datasets and all of the R scripts used in the book. Additionally, the companion website is packed full of extra material for each chapter in the book. Finally, Field has several videos posted to the website which includes a lecture series on statistics.

The book contents are very good, but the quality of the book is poor. I ordered one paperback and the pages were falling of the book in one month of use. I returned the book and the second book that I have received has the same problem. The page were falling of again. I'm very careful using the book, and it look like new. I believe it happened because of the poor quality.
I recommend buy the hard cover. I'm very frustrated about that. I have attached 2 pics (1st book and the 2nd book).

Contains base theory, then all of the necessary equations for calculating sight distances, vertical curve lengths, horizontal and vertical curve obstructions. Some of the values used should be cross-referenced with values from the AASHTO Green Book, as some of the design values in the book may be out of date. Also discusses spiral curves, compund curves, unsymmetrical vertical curves. There are equations, detail narratives, and example problems in this book, that I have not seen in any other manual. An excellent companion to your Green Book, CERM, and HCM.

Excellent reference for Highway and Railroad work

This book is an excellent reference if you are performing any type of engineering or surveying work that involves spiral or vertical curves. Though it is an older book, the collection of formulas is unsurpassed. Just ignore the pictures of '57 Chevys cruising down the highways. :)

Preface


A picture is worth a thousand words, and so is a good example. Perl by Example is organized to teach you Perl from scratch with examples of complete succinct programs. Each line of a script sample is numbered, and important lines are highlighted. The output of the program is then displayed with numbers corresponding to the script numbers. Following the output is a separate explanation for each of the numbered lines. The examples are small and to the point for the topic at hand. Since the backbone of this book was used as a student guide to Perl, the topics are modularized. Each module builds on the previous one with a minimum of forward referencing and a logical progression from one topic to the next.
Perl by Example is not just a beginner's guide, but a complete guide to Perl. It covers many aspects of what Perl can do, from regular expression handling, to formatting reports, to interprocess communication. It will teach you about Perl and, in the process, a lot about UNIX. Although some UNIX knowledge will greatly accelerate your learning path, it is not assumed that you are a guru. Anyone reading, writing, or just maintaining Perl programs can greatly profit from this text. Topics such as networking, system calls, IPC, and CGI are designed to save the time it takes to figure out how the functions work, what libraries are needed, and the correct syntax, etc. Now, in this second edition, Perl5 objects and references have been added, and since Perl is the standard for writing CGI scripts for the Internet, there is a chapter to get you started writing your own dynamic Web pages.
Perl has a rich variety of functions for handling strings, arrays, the system interface, networking, and more. In order to understand how these functions work, background information concerning the how's, why's, and what for's is provided before demonstrating sample programs that function. This eliminates constantly wading through manual pages and other UNIX books to understand what is going on, what the arguments mean, and what the function actually does.
The Appendices contain a complete list of functions and definitions, command line switches, debugging options, special variables, Perl translators and sample scripts, including a fully functional, annotated Perl program using taintperl and interfacing with a database application.
I have been teaching now for the past 30 years and am committed to understanding how people learn. Having taught Perl now for over a year, I find that many new Perlers get frustrated when trying to teach themselves how to program in Perl. I, too, experienced frustration when first tackling Perl. This is an excellent Perl book for beginners

This is a very complete book if you want to learn and start to implement Perl. While Perl is not the be all/end all language, it is very much fun to use, especially in the UNIX world where you find the limitations of all the various shells limiting. Perl can get you going, and you can continue to learn more and more (such as object-oriented Perl) as you grow and evolve.

But this book is really good for beginners. While the examples are simple (as they SHOULD BE in a learning environment) each example line is explained in great gory detail. None of these "Hey, look at what I can distract you with while trying to teach you this simple example" or some authors involved and crazy "Case Study"; these examples are easy to assimilate. It is up to the reader to put the concepts together to make a coherant program (and Perl is a very forgiving language, making it great for beginning programmers).

When I was teaching Perl for collegiate newbies, this was my book of choice. The students would actually visualize some program, and this book would show them how the pieces worked. So the students just put them together and away they went. A lot of other Perl books fall very short in this aspect. Of the dozens of Perl books I own, this is one to read if you want to start with Perl.

One fo the better books I have run across on Perl.

Good straight forward examples... most show the input, the code and the output produced by the code. You need only understand the logic of programming... the book fills in the rest you need to know. I have six or seven books on Perl but always reach for this or The Little Black Book for syntax and examples. Invest in a good editor designed for Perl programming like OptiPerl [with syntax checking and debugger] and you will be well on your way!

Good book for learning Perl

This book was required for an online course on Perl programming and so far I have to say that it has been pretty easy to read and follow. It has many clear examples and exercises. Not to mention, the book is HUGE and covers a large range of topics. If you are going to learn Perl, this book is a great one to pick up.

About the Author
Phillip C. Wankat is Clifton L. Lovell Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and director of undergraduate degree programs at Purdue University’s School of Engineering Education. His current research interests include adsorption, large-scale chromatography, simulated moving bed systems, and distillation, as well as improvements in engineering education. He received the 2007 Distinguished Education Alumni Award of Distinction from Purdue’s College of Education, and the 2005 Shreve Prize in Chemical Engineering. With K. S. Knaebel, he contributed the Mass Transfer section to Perry’s Handbook of Chemical Engineering, Eighth Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2008).

It's alright for the Mass Transfer Class

This books pretty good as far as ChemE text books go. There was enough theory backed by actually showing you examples on how to do the math. Of course it probably won't hurt if you go look else where for clarification while taking your Mass Transfer class.

I can't give it higher than three-stars however, when taking my unit operations lab when I went back to review the material from this book I found it difficult to accurately apply the techniques to separation processes which are not set up in the same manner as the examples within the book.

This all may not matter since you'll be buying this for your mass transfer class one way or the other.

Pleasure? No. School? Definitely.

I simply ordered this book as a gift for my sister, who is in a mass transfer course for her chemical engineering program. It was a required book, and seems to do the trick, as it has been used since the first edition in that class. The book contains homework problems (which aren't used in the course, but my sister has done to solidify her understanding of the material) and, while being highly technical, explains concepts adequately. It's especially useful if required for your coursework. Amazon was definitely the cheapest place that I found it (at least compared to the school bookstore and online websites).

Do not buy this book as a kindle.

I bought this book as a kindle because I was tired of carrying around heavy books, but the formatting of the book is terrible. there are no page numbers it just goes by 'location' and it is really hard to flip back and forth between homework problems and useful equations.
