Well-written, honest, heart-felt, touching, and uplifting

When I was first approached to review this book, my initial reaction was, "No!" But I calmed down and had a look at the material Philip Werner sent me. The more I saw and read, the more I was determined that I had to feature this book. Philip kindly sent me a hardback copy of the book for review. It is exquisite. A pristine white cover with only the words "101 Vagina". The pages are thick, smooth, and glossy. Simply turning the pages is an experience in itself. Even the dedication is beautiful: "Dedicated to our bodies and our sexuality, our deepest desires and most delicate vulnerability."

Toni Childs certainly gets it right in her foreword. This book is definitely "in-your-face". Like her, I applaud the courage of the women who have taken part in this project. And I applaud Philip Werner for producing this "daring, provocative and controversial book".

The book itself features anonymous pictures of 101 vaginas accompanied by intimate revelations in poetry or prose. We are offered personal insights into their vaginas from women with issues about the way it looks, a woman proud of her hairiness, a pregnant woman about to give birth, a girl about to insert her first tampon, a woman having her period, a woman who compares her sexual encounters with meals, a proud woman's poetic homage to her vagina, and many more.

The passages are well-written, honest, heart-felt, touching, and uplifting. Some are even humorous. This book does contain some confronting issues including masturbation, menstruation, sexual encounters, and alternative words for "vagina" which some may consider offensive. However, there is nothing overtly sexual about the text or the photos, which are taken front-on from a standing position in black and white. As one of the contributors states, "Nothing to be shy or ashamed about, rather something to celebrate and enjoy."

Through "101 Vagina", Werner invites viewers to discuss the vagina more comfortably. Werner hopes this will encourage women to feel more comfortable with their bodies, doing away with the need to alter appearances through cosmetic labiaplasty. Well, you have certainly made me more comfortable, Philip. Thank you.

101 Vagina is a vehicle for discussing female sexuality rather than a book about vaginas.

The 101 photographs are of unclothed mid-drifts. One simply sees frontal views of non-pornographic pubic areas including clitorises, abdomens, and thighs. Each photographed woman wrote her own thoughts and experiences with her sexuality ranging from shame, joy, celebration, and even forgiveness.

In a world where women's bodies are depicted in perfectly Photoshopped glossy magazines, 101 Vagina empowers women to realize their normalcy and accept the true human condition with love and compassion.

I am only disappointed that this book's exposure is limited by the financial resources necessary to publicize it internationally.

Mrs Norton, the subject of the picture, leads the of men on a chase that is seemingly simple, but as soon as Holmes and Watson arrive in Bohemia, there are complications and a thread of lies that make it a harder for Holmes and Watson to get to the bottom of the problem.

It is a journey that both Holmes and Watson find to be full of twists and turns right until the very end. The question is, can the two men solve the crime in time before all enemies of the King rise to power?

Disappointing...

Holmesians are well aware that the ending of "A Scandal in Bohemia" is highly unsatisfactory for both Holmes and the King of Bohemia, whom Irene Adler, his former lover, is in an excellent position to blackmail. In his latest Holmes pastiche, John Hall takes this situation up again about a year after the events of "Scandal." Irene Norton says she needs to consult Holmes, but vanishes on the way to 221B Baker Street. Apparently kidnapped and left to die, Norton is rescued by Holmes and Watson... but her account of the new situation that threatens the King and herself is highly unsatisfactory and probably pretty close to an outright lie. Instead of refusing to take the case, as Conan Doyle's consulting detective always did when faced with a client who refused to explain the real situation, Holmes and Watson wind up in Bohemia in what is pretty certain to be a wild-goose chase, and both Holmes and Watson bumble in some pretty inexplicable ways, with Watson coming perilously close to being a comical sidekick more than once. The quest to recover the famous letters and photo supposedly stolen from Irene Norton succeeds with ridiculous ease, considering the planless, gormless, painfully unintelligent approaches adopted by Holmes. And then the fact that Mrs. Norton lied suddenly assumes deadly importance.
With the situation treated rather lightly by the author throughout, it was a jarring and unwelcome twist for this elderly and jaded reader when the adventure ended with the very abrupt deaths of five characters (two offstage), over only two pages, with one of the deceased certainly an innocent bystander!
Not one of Hall's better efforts, this goes on the bottom of the stack with TRAVELS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. It gets three stars only because of the fine period writing style in which the improbable adventure is recounted.

Addressing the Rotary

I owned the original version of this book, but wanted a newer one to share with the local Rotary. They were extremely interested in my topic and discussion that some wanted to own the book for themselves. (So I gave it away). Additionally, they found the hints and essential information important to working with diverse employees. I recommend this book and it's companions to all employers and those traveling.

Lots of fun and guidance

There is so much data stuffed into this book about so many cultures that its almost overwhelming! This is an impressive book covering many countries and most of the information is still current, despite the fact the last version was copywrited back in the 1990s.

I'd recommend this book for culture buffs as well as for general writers. A great source of ideas.

I feel confident that I can finally learn the art of tarot

I always feel drawn to tarot decks, but very seldom do I find one that works for me. Upon viewing the cards, some of the images looked so unlike what I had previously seen. It was so unusual, yet so fresh and unique. People say that the Raven's Prophecy Tarot isn't a deck for beginners. As a beginner, who could not truly get involved with tarot because of the lack of symbolism and straight-forward meanings, I feel this could not be further from the truth. As I was reading through the various meanings of the cards in the accompanying book, I found that I understood the symbolism the author used quite clearly. There wasn't a lot of silly or boring things about it. It was totally put up front for the aspiring diviner to learn. She talks about her opinion about specific cards and what her cards mean. Because of my experience before, I was hesitant on picking this set up because I felt like I could never understand tarot. People just made things way to complicated before this experience. Now, I feel like I can finally learn how to use tarot properly with confidence because of the clear descriptions. There isn't long entries about what the author thinks. It's short and sweet explanations about the cards and the various key points they possess in a general reading. I cannot wait to dive into this set!

Great purchase, wonderful cards and even better book

These cards are truly a masterpiece. I own several tarot decks and have been doing readings for myself and others for about fifteen years, so I'm definitely not a newbie. I was a bit hesitant to purchase them because although I love Maggie Stiefvater's amazing Raven Cycle series, I have been burned on bad tarot decks before. I hate to buy decks site unseen, so I really hesitated and agonized over my decision. But zero regrets over here. Even better than the cards themselves are the book that they come with, which gave me new insights into aspects of cards that I truly never thought of before. Thank you Maggie Stiefvater for reinvigorating my flagging interest in tarot and refreshing my perspective. Kudos!

A Solid Tarot Deck

I did a video review of this on my YouTube channel (arwen61) if you want to see a few of the cards. Overall this is a nice product from Llewellyn. The cards are good quality. The accompanying book is excellent. I think because Stiefvater is an author, the guidebook is just that much better for her writing.

There are black and white images of the cards in the book which is my preference. The text is in-depth with added insight from the author about the journey she took in the making of the cards.

This deck has some unusual representations. One of my favorites is the Magician. Instead of seeing a full figure, we are offered a hand that has tattoos on it. Then Strength is that same hand closed in a fist. I liked the continuity of the hands throughout this deck.

Here and there were slight (to me) misses in terms of meanings. The Star card was the most glaring for me. I pride myself on not being too much of a traditionalist but I guess we all have our stumbling blocks. Instead of a woman kneeling or standing near water, we have stars in the sky reflecting in water below.

Overall, this deck has a dark, brooding atmosphere. Stiefvater has chosen to use shadow and light to good effect. While I might not recommend this for a Tarot beginner, I think it will make an excellent addition to anyone's collection. It probably won't be one that I will read for my clients with, but I can see using it for meditative and magickal work.
