Other reviewers have covered the age of the book rather well. The pictures are old and the tools used can be found in many secondhand stores but the techniques used haven't changed. As a matter of fact I was surprised by the number of tools that have been around for the last fifty years. I found cutting and shaping wood hasn't changed near as much as finishing wood. This book supplies the technique and the knowledge, all you need is the practice. The book truly is timeless.

I love this book

I love this book.I am a college student who is also trying to become a contractor. I purchased this book because i learned from my dad that handmade cabinetry is very popular among new home builders. I thought it might be nice to understand how cabinets that are handcrafted are made. A total shock to me is that i actually wanted to make a set of cabinets after i started reading this text. The book includes so many instructionals on making every single part of the cabinet as well as how to use all the tools. I am embarrassed to say that some tools mentioned in the text i had never seen or heard of before. I think this book is very worthwhile for anyone who wants to learn how to create with their hands. Everything now is made with machines and being able to make art( which is what my dad calls wood furniture of any type) is a very prized skill. I would say to anyone that you need to buy this text if you want to make cabinetry or just learn some basic craftsmanship.
Honestly the more of the book i have read the more i have learned and the better able i am to do my job. I am about to start a large reno job and i stand to make several thousand more simply because i am going to make all the cabinetry myself. This book is worth it for small or large jobs the knowledge is priceless.

The book arrived as advertised in new condition. A woodworking friend and I both refer to this book as the woodworker's bible. Some of the information in it relating to power tools is dated but the basics are all still relevant. I only wish I had been aware of this book years ago.

This book teaches the way I learn. It starts with an overview of the entire subject and then goes into each part in depth. The overview gives me a structure to hang the in depth knowledge on. When an author goes into depth without giving an overarching understanding it's hard to see how the in depth information relates to the whole picture.

A Terrific Introduction to Front End Development

This book was just what I was looking for. After years of watching web developers do their magic, I wanted to dive in and learn what it was all about. This book was absolutely perfect - from cover to cover it's filled with clear, instructive, chatty coverage of just about every front end tool and technology I've ever heard of. The samples and exercises were great to exercise every concept - usually supplemented with thing I came up with on my own to try. I now feel I have a very solid foundation in front end development and am ready to take it further. The author is clearly fully up to date with the latest trends, but also covers the foundations with remarkable thoroughness. Just great. My only complaint is that the publisher's site makes it just about impossible to submit errata (there is some, but not much for a book with this heft). Thank you, Julie, for very many enjoyable hours over the last few months!

Just didn't do it for me.

Explanations moved too slowly and didn't seem to follow a logical progression. Too wordy for a beginner's book and not enough content for a reference. And frankly, just a dry read.

Clicking on code examples stranded my reader in the appendix with no way to navigate back to the section I was reading.

About the Author
Kathleen Park Talaro is a microbiologist, educator, author, and artist. She has been nurturing her love of microbiology since her youth growing up on an Idaho farm where she was first fascinated by tiny creatures she could just barely see swimming in a pond. This interest in the microbial world led to a biology major at Idaho State University, where she worked as a teaching assistant and scientific illustrator for one of her professors. This was the beginning of an avocation that she continues today―that of lending her artistic hand to interpretation of scientific concepts. She continued her education at Arizona State University, Occidental College, California Institute of Technology, and California State University. She has taught microbiology and major’s biology courses at Pasadena City College for 30 years, during which time she developed new curricula and refined laboratory experiments. She has been an author of, and contributor to, several publications of the William C. Brown Company and McGraw-Hill Publishers since the early 1980s, first illustrating and writing for laboratory manuals and later developing this textbook. She has also served as a coauthor with Kelly Cowan on the first two editions of Microbiology: A Systems Approach. Kathy continues to make microbiology a major focus of her life and is passionate about conveying the significance and practical knowledge of the subject to students, colleagues, family, friends, and practically anyone who shows interest. In addition to her writing and illustration, she keeps current attending conferences and participating in the American Society for Microbiology and its undergraduate educational programs. She is gratified by the many supportive notes and letters she has received over the years from devotees of microbiology and users of her book. She lives in Altadena, California, with husband Dave Bedrosian, and son David. Whenever she can, she visits her family in Idaho. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, reading true crime books, music, crossword puzzles, and playing with her rescued kitties.

Barry Chess has been teaching microbiology at Pasadena City College for over 15 years. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles, and did several years of postgraduate work at the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on the expression of eukaryotic genes involved in the development of muscle and bone. At Pasadena City College, Barry developed a new course in human genetics and helped to institute a biotechnology program. He regularly teaches courses in microbiology, general biology, and genetics, and works with students completing independent research projects in biology and microbiology. Over the past several years, Barry’s interests have begun to focus on innovative methods of teaching that lead to greater student understanding. He has written cases for the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and presented talks at national meetings on the use of case studies in the classroom. In 2009, his laboratory manual, Laboratory Applications in Microbiology: A Case Study Approach, was published. He is thrilled and feels very fortunate to be collaborating with Kathy Talaro, with whom he has worked in the classroom for more than a decade, on this ninth edition. Barry is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and regularly attends meetings in his fields of interest, both to keep current of changes in the discipline and to exchange teaching and learning strategies with others in the field.

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, ...

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, there were some pages with damage, but not enough to return the book and then fall behind on the material for my class, daily quizzes and all. this international version had the same info as the u.s. version. the one thing the professor mentioned was that the authors had provided some misinformation for some of the later sections in the book. so she created her own material for the class to remedy that. other than that, the book did the job for my microbiology class.
